I love listening to Sir Roger Penrose expound on his lifetime of education. I find his talks on consciousness to be intriguing and I hope more research is done in this area.
Sounds very like the theistic "complicated therefore god" argument from ignorance, possibly because too much context has been missed in this clip.
The laws of physics can be described using the language if mathematics. If consciousness resides within the laws of physics, it can be described using mathematics. Therefore it is a computation although it may not be an algorithm.

How the evolutionist explain the evolution the consciousness by natural selection??
How did he arrive at the conclusion that what we call thoughts do not follow rules?
It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with primary consciousness will probably have to come first.
What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing.
I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order.
My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. Math in necessary but insufficient to understand the world. Besides the linear objective, there is a lateral subjective existence to account for. My video on the nature of reality is mostly a review of understood proven science with some lateral abstract insights, leading to reasoned speculation.
I detail, qualitatively, the similar relationships found in the images and ideas of science, math, topology, and geometry. Since the information is in the abstract, it is scientific metaphysics.

There is no math to understand. If you only like objective proofs and concrete equations, this will not be for you. This is more like describing the parts a puzzle; showing how all things work similarly in the abstract.

Consciousness is a fact that every human being has, which is a flowing field of information which is made out of different concentrated electromagnetic fields. Whereas consciousness follows rules, the specific rules have everything to do with what brought forth existence, which deals directly with the laws of existence, or the rules that make up reality. Everything is energy and energy is a lot greater than the limitations of the little bit of information that human beings get to have during a lifetime duration of being human.
I see the big problem with the majority of people which is sad as of the present time, because the majority of people think directly from their body, that is their material self/ego. And actually know nothing about the unconscious and subconsciousness and the other nodes of consciousness in the whole scheme of things.
So, even now, as you read my words, you’re so limited in the data that you have collected that this false-media-entertainment-addiction , your religious-beliefs , ideologies, scientific-theories, has gotten the average human being so lost that they forget who they truly are, which is the Existence itself.
Existence is an energy, you are this energy!! You are it!!!
You don’t need to prove your existence, you just need to collect more information in order to evolve yourself in a neutral-positive-conscious-manner.
Otherwise, you are going to keep getting anxiety, you’re going to keep running into people who don’t know jack squat about what’s going on in reality. The wakeful state of consciousness is different than the unconscious, however , they share the same energy, so where is the duality in this? However, they are still one through the energy that these layers of consciousness utilize to process information in different states.
Because they are the same essential ENERGY!!!!
Thereby, through this example, it is clearly shown that through their relative fields/ blocks/ layers of processing information they go hand to hand to help each other.

"No following rules" what the heck Roger. That is one whopper of a claim that defies all we observer. Your going to need one heck of a proof for that one.
