Semiotics Of The Tie

SemioticsInc

Sheldon requires a lesson in semiotics from Penny to understand the meaning of the tie. The reference to semiotics in this mainstream comedy shows the increasing acceptance of the science as a tool to aid comprehension. What’s more, in an ironic twist, it is the ‘blonde’ who teaches the scientist. This suggests we are all semioticians, as we all have an understanding of the communications by which we are surrounded. In Penny’s world, the tie seems to be a common and well understood message. Of course, Sheldon does not inhabit Penny’s world. Therefore, he needs her cultural insights in order to understand the tie. Note though, Sheldon can interpret the violin case. That said, he does propose 2 possibilities of meaning, in his own inimitable fashion. .
