  1. Just because someone excels within the hard sciences, or rather one field of the soft sciences such as psychology, doesn't mean they are well versed within all soft sciences like sociology. He needs to keep to his own lane, because otherwise he will keep losing credibility — because in certain areas it is crystal clear he has no clue what he is talking about due to his lack of basic scholarship in not knowing what well established vocab/terminology on the topics you all touched upon here within the intersectional cross interdisciplinary fields of politics/history/anthropology/sociology. I would tell him: " #StayInYourLane "

May I ask when the full episode ist going to be up on iTunes Podcasts?

Judging from past episodes there seem to be about 3 days between trailer and full episode but not for this one – is it because it is split?

  3. "No more famines" thanks to Industrialized farming & crop hybrids, which have also caused health to plummet, cancer to skyrocket, and an "industrialized" medicine aka Big Pharma to hurt instead of help? Ten minutes was plenty.

  4. FANtastic! Steven Pinker’s answer to modern problems is to double down on progress: the policies of the past 300 years are still the best available. Enlightenment Now is based on empirical facts/data. And a great read. Another must read-The Beginning of Infinity-by David Deutsch.

  5. technology and science have given us the capacity fo teed more people than are alive, but capitalism has given us the corrupted motivations of letting the excess rot while people starve. I respect Pinker, but he has a rosy glassed, romantic notion of capital.

  6. Much as I like Steve – and I have read his book – he treads the very thin line between his position at Harvard, which is very Left, and even he admits this in this interview – and he buffers this with criticisms of Trump . Some criticisms are justified but others are unfair and deliberately bending the knee to his colleagues such that he can go back to academia and not be 'too' demonized. Classic example of wanting to have his cake and eat it. He could placate himself (as many intellectuals do) as a 'voice of reason' rather accept himself as somewhat morally weak. 7/10.

  7. Capitalism is the best why to move forward. It's not the best for the poor, but wealth is equal to everyone.

  8. Democracy is not necessarily an improvement. Yes, it's an improvement from dictatorship, but a democracy can be dictatorial to the minority (tax payers).

  9. He starts off praising democracy and warning us against communism and then he has to have a go at Trump who is all for democracy and making the world an even greater place. Calling him a dictator. What’s with that? Does he not realize that the other option would have been communism. Oh wait, he is from Canada, he has to be anti-Trump, it is his liberal superiority that compels him towards hating Trump and name calling. If anything Trudeu is a dictator, after all he said if he doesn’t win the upcoming election he is bringing in the UN military. Does that not sound dictatorish?r

  10. Elite white folks like Pinker perpetuate the myth, the big lie about progress. That we could create a perfect society. That human endeavours can make the world a better place while all evidence shows that it's become far worse. Simple folks seem to love Steven Pinker and his bourgeois eloquence, in place of the facts, reality and the sufferings of millions of human being that rises every year every day. His analysis is unplugged from reality.

  11. He actually called flat earthers "the biblical view of the world." I'm really disappointed. It's only the most important piece of writing in human history, no need to be familiar with it i guess.

  12. Libertarians aren't against social safety nets, they're against the violation of property to fund them.

Some form of federal republic which Scandinavia essentially has if not explicitly defined as such, is a close compromise and seems to be the most successful balance of productivity, freedom, and happiness.

There have been some very laissez-faire governments in somewhat recent history. America from the end of slavery to the beginning of the 20th century, maybe around 1920s, which saw some immense economic growth. Much of Scandinavia around the 1900-1950sish, which saw some amazing economic growth.

But because perfection hasn't been achieved doesn't mean it isn't the ideal, morally or economically. Isn't that the premise of progressivism?

  13. 31:00 Nobody denies that the temperature has increased over the last 150. That is actually in support of the argument that humans are not causing a catastrophic warming. That just shows how little critical thinking this guy has when understanding what the thoughts are on the issue.

  14. 35:15 You wouldn't believe how many times I've head people say that Capitalism is responsible for slavery. They even said that slavery was private ownership of the means of production, which were the slaves. Totally insane.
