Steven Pinker is a Harvard professor, renowned cognitive scientist and bestselling author.
Pinker’s lifelong fascination is with how we think about each other’s thoughts. In his new book, When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows, he explores the concept of common knowledge: the awareness that something is not only known, but known to be known by all – and how it shapes the very fabric of our social, political and economic worlds.

Steve?! Call him Steven man… That's what he calls himself
Oh dear, Mao is alive and lives in the body of a woman in London.
My question would have been about the idea that there aren't cycles. I liked it that Pinker denied this, but I'm not quite sure I can let go a soft form of it, a little like Hegelian dialectics: every position contains its own contradiction or the seeds of its own destruction. You can find this in Aristotle's prediction that democracy will give way to autocracy or demagoguery – precisely because, at some point, democratic freedoms allow too much leeway to those who oppose them to rise to power. Something similar might be happening now in terms of communication tech: a revolution in knowledge dissemination that began with the printing press and mass literacy is now, in the age of the algorithmic bubble, devolving to an astonishing degree, into a kind of relativistic anti-communication.

Steven Pinker's work often sheds light on the fundamental mechanics of human interaction and cognition. Common knowledge—the idea that something is known, and known to be known by everyone—seems like a crucial, yet often unexamined, foundation for things like social norms, coordinated actions, and even political consensus. It's the difference between you knowing a rule, and you knowing that everyone else knows the rule, which radically changes how you'll act.
