Institute Professor Philip Morrison, renowned nuclear physicist, astronomer, filmmaker and public science figure, delivers a magical talk to MIT alumni during Technology Day in June 1994. Taking inspiration from the theme title of the event, “The Wonder of It All: The Arts at MIT,” Prof. Morrison talks about how wonder is indeed the motive that lies behind nearly everything that goes on at MIT. He goes on to explore the symbiotic workings of mind and hand – mens et manus – through time and across disciplines, from prehistoric stone tools to modern physics and video art. Introductions by alumni president Bill Hecht ’61, MIT President Charles Vest, and Professor Ellen Harris (first provost of the arts at MIT) set the stage by highlighting how the arts and humanities have been integral to the MIT curriculum and experience since its founding.
