Technology that knows what you're feeling | Poppy Crum

TED

What happens when technology knows more about us than we do? Poppy Crum studies how we express emotions — and she suggests the end of the poker face is near, as new tech makes it easy to see the signals that give away how we’re feeling. In a talk and demo, she shows how “empathetic technology” can read physical signals like body temperature and the chemical composition of our breath to inform on our emotional state. For better or for worse. “If we recognize the power of becoming technological empaths, we get this opportunity where technology can help us bridge the emotional and cognitive divide,” Crum says.

  1. So, basically, tech corporations are borg, resistance is futile?

I could definitely see this tech being used for good, only question is who's gonna be producing it…

  2. Some of her arguments are extremist and not based on serious data. She talks about a number of different softwares without explaining the obstacles for each one. Also, Emotions are not always leaked thru our body, and softwares cannot comprehend the complexity of emotions (yet). They still show massively wrong interpretations. Humans are still far better than AI softwares to infer the motives and meaning of behavior. Not a very precise nor an excellent presenter.

  3. Amazing talk! thank you! that is the future, and we should be happy about it, these kind of tech will make us more healty, save our lifes, and understand better ourself.

  4. It's good. I'm doing computing science and it's the future. What we won with the tecnology? With the strong CPU processament we have potents computers and smartphones! The future can scare us sometime, but the new ever scare.

  5. sounds rather speculative, her only evidence is a video showing a pupil changing in size ('omg amazin this can tell whethr u have cancer with 99.4% succes-rate ?!!') and some LSD visualization of our breath ('omg so spacy n colorful ! must b rly true ??')

anyway, let's all hope it will be facebook developing this new technology ! #zuck2020

  6. Try as you might, none of this is even remotely "OK" and it's an absolute certainty that this sort of technology will be used by the surveillance state much more than in some sort of benign, person-to-person mode.

  7. I have been amazed in my life at the subtle ways people communicate non verbally. Humans don’t actually need a common language to communicate. Having a language in common aids certain types of human activity very much, but actually detracts from other types. I came to learn that feeling at peace with myself and contentment is actually communicated non verbally without me opening my mouth, and can put people at ease around me or even attract them. As with so many things, there is much more to human interaction than meets the eye, or ear.

  8. And yet it is very easy to spot a liar. She knows this will lead to extremely bad results. She is not even deceived into believing a lie. She knows she is lying about what this technology will lead to. She is an amateur in way over her head. Just a tool.

  9. When i think about how the world will going to be in the future, im aways very excited or very scared. But In both cases the society learn an grow as a living thing, between ups and downs, to a better self. If you can predct and avoid the mistakes, good. But sometimes you have to take a chance, its not like if we are in a winning position or something. The world is now better than it was, but its still a shitshit.

  10. Or a North Korean dictator reading the emotions of his subjects. The technology would make him invincible. The hands the technology lands in are making all the difference if we'll have a step forward or the perfect dictatorship.

  11. I'm from America. As long as America remains a capitalist corporatocracy, "empathetic technology", as you call it, will be in the hands of soulless and profit driven entities. For this reason, it will inevitably do more harm than good. We need to re-establish the balance of power and reevaluate the socialist aspects of our entire system (There are many. They're just the wrong ones and weighted incorrectly) before any of this will be used to enhance our humanity.
