TEDxObserver – Peter Lovatt – Psychologist and dancer

TEDx Talks

Dance and the mind
Peter is a reader in psychology and principle lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire, but his first love was dance. Before entering academia, he trained at the Guildford School of Acting and the Cecchetti Ballet, and worked as a professional dancer. Later, he went to study psychology and computational neuroscience and in 2008, he set up the first Dance Psychology Lab. This has enabled him to combine his twin passions of dance and psychology and, through experimental work, to explore the ways in which dance, and different types of dance, can affect the brain. His most recent work, and the subject of his talk, has involved investigating the effects of dance on people suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. Dr Peter Lovatt’s talk at TEDxObserver (http://www.guardian.co.uk/tedx) 2010 was cited by many in the audience as one of their highlights of the day.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.

These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  1. This is fantastic! As a dance teacher and currently studying to be a Marriage & Family Therapist I literally yelled out loud with how great this was! I love his energy and his lack of inhibitions.

  2. this makes so much effing sense to me omg. back in 9th grade and below, i used to be the most timidest and shiest person EVER, that was when i used to rarely dance. in late 10th grade, i started to get a little less shy with people, that was when i got motivated to dance more after my sisters complimented my dancing skills. in 11th grade, after summer holidays, everyone told me that i was a COMPLETELY different person and that i was very sociable and fun, and that was after i danced almost everyday during the holidays. IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE. my best friend and i have been wondering what went through me that made me change so much, and i FINALLY got the answer

  3. Love this just brilliant, and so true, we are at Zumba a few times a week and so many people say it's helps with depression moodiness etc aswell as the obvious fitness and weight loss benefits

  4. as a person that has always felt uncomfortable at the idea of dancing, Feeling depressed at my ineptitude in this subject at worst and just usually disgusted I find it's psychology very interesting

  5. Why do we dance? I'd add "how"? I have dance as a complete blindspot.(my second largest, I think) physically and psychologically both.
    Comes with my autism?
