The Basics of Semiotics (3): The First Correlate

PhiloSign

First on the list is the First Correlate asking the question: what is the sign in itself. The sign can be:
(1) Qualisign
(2) Sinsign
(3) Legisign

Try to spot these kinds of signs in your experience.
What is singular and forceful in your experince? Certain sound, distinct smell or visible object? That is a Sinsign.

Every experienced Sinsign embodies necessarily some qualities. When concentrating on these qualities the sign is functioning as a Qualisign.

The Sinsign could also be an instance of some law, rule, convention or habit. In that case it would function also as a Legisign and be an instance of it.

  1. Great video and good use of animation to distinguish quality from the thing that bears the quality. Loved the example involving the splash in the road since it shows how a single thing (the splash) can be viewed as a qualisign, sinsign, or legisign.
