This guy may be a professor and Nobel prize winner…but that does not excuse him from being a silly old fart who talks utter bollocks about AI. To talk about something being like Black Mirror ie a tv sci fi series is fucking stupid , as is AI being like "an alien being"….which he also said. If these gurus and academics stopped talking about "AI" as if it had some kind of magic to it and instead said what it actually is ie pattern matching of data by sophisticated computer algorithms using probability. Data is images, sound, structured text and unstructured text. Do that and the public would soon see through the shite that this bloke speaks…..
I don’t think rubbishing peoples believe in the fact that consciousness lies outside the brain by saying ‘ people have crazy ideas’ is just as intelligent as he is, no one can pinpoint consciousness in the brain in those that practice various techniques and follow especially Eastern believes going back thousands of years would probably believe that his put down is disingenuous.
For someone as vastly intelligent it’s shoddy at the least.
If humans are so selfish and evil as many suggest, why are we still alive today? Isn't it our greatest strengths that helped us survive? Self-sacrifice, heroism and not surrendering? Is evil mankind's greatest weakness or greatest strength?

This clip is a great example that even if you make great achievements in a certain intellectual domain. You can still be an idiot. To assume that a certain depth has been met on the matter (especially the brain) is pure intellectual arrogance, hubris, and plays into spreading of reductionist stupidity.
Here's the problem:Hinton assumes neural connections plus data are equivalent to consciousness. But he never elaborates on what a machine is capable of being conscious of. The level of a robot's awareness of itself is an unknown. And he openly admits that consciousness in humans is specious . How is it any less specious in robotics? He has no idea. He believes programming and data equals life. And the only way to find out whether this hypothetical of his is true, is to test it. No one is going to voluntarily swap their neurons for nano technology. This is all a very elaborate sales pitch. Hinton goes from tech to metaphysics, and he doesn't even blush.
Terrible linear logic that relies on perception and rubber hand illusion allegory. What if I put a bullet in someone's head would they know something changed? The idea that a machine can be "conscious" is based on a profound misunderstanding. A Machine is not a monad or a cognitive universe unto itself or even remotely comparable to humans. The reductionist debate on consciousness is a distraction. Machines are externally assembled series of mechanisms designed and made by human beings in a factories. Are you? Machines are not self organizing entities just because some people automated a machinal process. The language game though says a lot about the self image of those that hold this view. This quasi-religious anthropomorphism is not really about "consciousness" or "artificial intelligence," it is all about "cooling the mark out." Cooling the mark out" is a sociological term coined by Erving Goffman in 1952 to describe the process of managing a victim's ("mark") anger and humiliation after a con game, helping them accept a loss quietly. It involves easing the victim into a new self-image to prevent them from causing trouble.

So what is consciousness? If brain neurones don’t understand the replacement….still it becomes consciousness means…..consciousness is outside the brain system so that even Ai in some order achieves the level of consciousness 🤔🤔🤔
Everything is concious in its own way. A stone, a flower, a tree, an animal and us. The planet, the sun, the solar system, the galaxy and there for the universe. Perhaps better said the other way around. The complexity of your brain, let you use that conciousness to navigate and label everything you see, hear touch and taste. Those labels are not truth, it's just your perception of it. To claim that you know, is arrogant and ignorant. So, in the end, this is the best guess I have for what is going on…
Is it even possible to create nano that mimics a brain cell without the body rejecting it ? If it isn't organic, then there would be a high chance of failure! Even transplants fail because they are incompatible.
one criticism for this…..I have seen this over and over and over. Scientist find one or two principles, and then all of a sudden they think they have SEEN all the hidden mechanisms of this universe, so they think, "WELL that's that! We are scientists YAY!". They don't stop to think of the exclusion principle. There may be OTHER hidden mechanisms, that you may have missed. YOU SHOULD always assume, you are NOT seeing the entire picture.
