The Evolution of Postmodern Thought | Helen Pluckrose

New Discourses

Helen Pluckrose develops the definition of “Social Justice” as it is used in the academic literature in this tradition, explains its connections to identity politics and the political correctness movement, and then shows the relevance of the original postmodernists to this Theory in some detail. She does this to elegantly describe the progression of these ideas from Theory to activism to the streets by describing how these ideas originated, evolved, and were built upon by successive generations of Theorists leading up to those who have become famous names even outside of the scholarly world today: for examples, Peggy McIntosh, Barbara Applebaum, and Robin DiAngelo. She wraps up by explaining how this newest generation of Theorists simplified the highly abstract ideas of their predecessors and made it far clearer and easier to understand so that it could, as we now see all around us, eventually go mainstream.

    12 Foundations Of BB:
1."All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." -2 Timothy 3:16
2."This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." -Joshua 1:8
3.“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” -Matthew 7:24‭-‬27
4."Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." -Philippians 3:13‭,14
5."Therefore, when I was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or the things I plan, do I plan according to the flesh, that with me there should be Yes, Yes, and No, No? But as God is faithful, our word to you was not Yes and No." -2 Corinthians 1:17‭,18‭
6."For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints…Let all things be done decently and in order." -1 Corinthians 14:33‭,40
7."To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven." -Ecclesiastes 3:1
8."Then the Lord answered me and said: "Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it." -Habakkuk 2:2
9."Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." -Romans 12:21
10."For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. The last enemy that will be destroyed is death…And why do we stand in jeopardy every hour?…Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits"…"Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame…But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." -1 Corinthians 15:25,26,30,33,34,57
11."Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish…His lord said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord."

    -Matthew 25:2,23
12."Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all." -1 Timothy 4:15 (NKJV)

  3. In my book justice is not by any stretch the same as social justice. Justice can quite easily be defined by means of natural law. Social justice, in my experice, is just petty thievery justified by artificial morals derived from freedom from responsibility. Other than that, I consider Helen, Peter and James heroes in the words' true sense. I'm glad I'm not alone in defending liberal society.

  4. Postmodernism is pure bullshit. I spent a year reading this garbage for a thesis and haven't recovered since. Next time if something looks like vile, divisive, irrational crap, it's best to assume it's vile, divisive and irrational. And do not touch it.

  5. Post Modern, Social Justice/Woke Fascism, is nothing more and nothing less than "the Emperor's New Clothes" (Hans Christian Anderson Fairy Tale) both in the way it is presented and accepted by it's adherents. To disagree with them, is to risk the ostracisation of the Child who cried out " the Emperor isn't wearing any-……Clothes!

  6. Tens of thousands of drafted men killed. But only the ways which the rights of women, minorities and lgbt were denied had been recognized … That always makes me roll my eyes.

  7. I wish she had been given more time. Her overview of the theorists was quite shallow and inaccurate. It sounded like she was reading from Wikipedia. To be fair
the woke mob's discourse is even more superficial

  8. Thank you for this. It is hard to explain these concepts to people without them thinking you're some sort of conspiracy theorist before you're able to get your point across. This was the shortest and most concise explanation I've seen so far. Again, thanks for the good work you all are doing.

  9. Derrida thinks words can't really convey meaning. It's a wonder he bothered writing books then! On the other hand, if he said that his peculiar concatenation of words don't really convey meaning, he'd be right.

  10. Who in the public eye has been called out for something they said 20 years ago which is only now considered homophobic And exactly what did they say that is now homophobic?

  11. What dishonest scholarship the left has engaged in! Draping themselves in the legitimacy of the university and "reason", and ultimately science itself, while pushing nihilism and their radical politics.

  12. Sigh. The far right don't speak about segregation. Only the left. She makes so much sense, but it's still disturbing that someone this insightful and educated still can't see that "liberty" is the far right. I guess that's a centrist/leftist liberal mind speaking, not the intelligent side. "Alt-right" is identical to the left, except they may reach the opposite conclusion based on the same world view, and they don't call themselves socialists. Nazis do call themselves socialists, but not Marxists. And all of them are on the left. The opposite of "Fascism isn't "Socialism", the opposite of both is "Liberty". Also known as "the extreme right", just next to conservatives and as far away from Communists and Nazis as you can possibly get. They have almost nothing in common and can therefore not be right-wing. It's sad how someone so otherwise clearheaded still lack this basic understanding, and insist on using the far left (Marxist/Lenin/Stalin) vocabulary of the political dichotomy. And I wish that they would use the term "neomarxists" instead of "postmodernists", as that would be much more clear and accurate.

  13. Well, I don't want to be a smartass but Social Justice is not post-modernist because it hinges on the idea of an objective truth. It may use or assimilate some post-modernist terminology, but it's different thing altogether.

  14. There is a simple defense against the white fragility argument. To judge privilege based upon statistics which represent white culture is fundamentally racist in itself. White westerners have supermarkets, the average Nigerian does not. To call this white privilege is to ASSUME THAT THE WHITE SCENARIO IS SUPERIOR. The whole white privilege argument rests on the initial premise that what white people have IS superior. The entire argument is self defeating from the start as it is built on the foundational belief that what whites have is superior and those who do not have it ire disadvantaged. Most people do not see this however as the post modernists are correct in that we are raised to believe in our own culture, not understanding that this is in fact a social construct. I should point out that this is not a bad thing in itself as binding social constructs are neccessary for a functional society. I fear that SJW'S are constructing a dis-functional societal construct

  15. While this talk/discourse given by Ms. Pluckrose is highly intellectual [and way above my limited brain], whatever happened to academia teaching the classical sciences? A higher education in things with practical applications not-so-much relating to people or interactions. Whatever happened to pursuing knowledge that is politically-free in areas such as:
Physics; Economics; Chemistry; Calculus; Language Arts/Composition; Engineering/Mathematics; Biology; etcetera.
To my pea brain, this is where society strayed off the beaten path. Again, Helen gives a brilliant talk here, a true gem. I just see danger in delving into contentious area's that can cause debate.

29:02 Robin Deangelo, white fragility, and the kafka trap.
29:40 The post modern church. You must agree that you are a racist patriarchal white male or else we will call you a racist patriarchal white male. If you disagree they will reference books citing papers which cite other papers that cite papers with no attempt to interrogate reality itself (because the scientific method is just a tool of white supremacy). It's all just signs pointing at signs right?
31:00 Core tenants of the Critical Race orthodoxy (ask not if racism has taken place, but how racism has manifested in a given situation)
33:13 This all sounds terrifying, what can we do now? Liberals must recognize that this is an anti liberal movement.
