The Matter Of Antimatter: Answering The Cosmic Riddle Of Existence

World Science Festival

You exist. You shouldn’t. Stars and galaxies and planets exist. They shouldn’t. The nascent universe contained equal parts matter and antimatter that should have instantly obliterated each other, turning the Big Bang into the Big Fizzle. And yet, here we are: flesh, blood, stars, moons, sky. Why? Come join us as we dive deep down the rabbit hole of solving the mystery of the missing antimatter.

MODERATOR: Brian Greene

PARTICIPANTS: Marcela Carena, Janet Conrad, Michael Doser, Hitoshi Murayama, Neil Turok

OPENING FILM: Animation by Eoin Duffy of Studio Belly, written by Justin Weinstein and Brian Greene

  1. At 44:19 Hatoshi says neutrinos are 0 charge so therefore they have the ability to switch to – or + charge.
If I had 0 in my bank account and I didn’t deposit any money I would be still left with 0.
Same goes for; if I had 0 in my bank account and I decided not to borrow from the bank I would be left with still 0. So neutrino can not act alone in changing the 0 charge to any balance unless external influence is made. So what the hell is he talking about?

  2. Where do you get the assumption that there was an equal amount of matter and antimatter in the beginning? How do you know there was any antimatter at all?

  3. The one guy looks like a fuckin’ clown with those stupid glasses. I’d be willing to bet they’re not even real prescription glasses. They almost look as dumb as thing on his chin. He thinks he’s a real stud. He showed up wanting to fuck one of those women, but his wife or girlfriend already knew his M.O. so she told him a week beforehand that the glasses and thing on his chin were really sexy, and made sure he arrived there looking like a bad cartoon character wearing a Halloween mask.

  4. I enjoyed the univerisal symmetry of anti-matter and matter, becuase really the universe is simple on every scale, but gets complex when we talk quantum. Why is that ? becuase the quantum world is not bounded by time or space, its result whether matter or anti-matter the world seems to be normal. The barrier between the classical world and the quantum world is space and time, something we cant break becuase we humans are kind of stuck in this relatavistic universe. This my friends is only proof of God's work, a work of art that looks so simple at the surface. Everyone sees the nature simple from the surface, experts in these different aspects of science are overwhelmed by the complexity of God's art in creating our cells, the animals and our earth.

  5. i have found something new with my perception of reality that may or may not hold substance to cosmology. If only i had valid credentials to validate such a thing.

  6. Anti-protons can be collected in ripe avocados but you must leave the avocado seed in the avocado or it will brown the anti-guacamole.

  7. Immagine our world turns into one of ancient Egypt, thousands of years later after much of history and technology becomes lost, archeologists discover cern.
What theories would you expect them to come up with as to it's use?
Would it be concidered a tomb for a king?
Would it be thought to be alien technology?
Would it take thousands of years before they would reach a level of understanding on par with ours now.
Would they develope totally different theories about the history of the universe?

  8. Neutrinos are the handwritings of GOD , Himself. He used the imbalance of the Neutral particle to etch out the reality of OUR perceived Universe. Read the book THE TRUTH , The Illumination of Conscience by author Jeffrey Michael Simoneaux

  9. Any one at the Absolute state , there he wants to brake the spontaneous flow of knowledge and hence there it comes the existence of Quantum Part very simple to follow and observe.

  10. I also look forward to the much awaited theory of irrelativity. I've taken the liberty of preparing many tanks of gas for the gas bags to make use of as they expound upon the nothingness they know so much about. Fascinating stuff!?!

  11. It's funny, if you just change the order of the two middle letters of the collider, you understand perfectly what is really going on. It's been the same since time began.

The large hardon collider. It's hilarious. How reality manages to poke through. Now that is even more funny. It's always been about the perceived size of a man's penis, yes, no? To think the size depends upon molecular level differences in size shows us the hilarity of their existence. Argue on people, dream on, explore your microscopically challenged points of view.

Our brains are not even close to being complex enough to decode the meaning of our reality or existence. You presume too much.

  12. After matter and anti-matter Collide there must be something leftover besides Energy, could that explain dark energy, dark matter?

  13. In the last, the ballon vil exblove,
And something's com out of something there ain't are there and it's big,and puff exblou finish empty,
    And start over again.

  14. Nevermind how you will get anti protons to acquire positrons and then guide the antihydrogen one molecule at a time out of a giant cyclotron and into a container, but let's assume you could. You would easily be able to contain a mole of antihydrogen in a vial of glass that can hold 250mL of water. antihydrogen only reacts violently with hydrogen so as long as you keep the vial closed you'll have in your purse a bomb that can erase a city from the map.

  15. I'm setting here during the Covid-19 isolation event, (cough) and watched the whole (cough) thing. I just want to (cough cough cough) say; "The Higgs boson (cough cough) is people!". THUD.

  16. @33:37 "because if you can not change…" why so firmly that this would not be possible. When two masses come together, in addition to the mass of both objects, there is also the energy of coming together. Two steel balls that touch each other have more energy than just their mass. There is heat that is released and sound upon impact. There is clearly extra energy there.
If it were matter and anti-matter instead of two steel balls (or rabbits) they would annihilate each other 100%. But there too, there can still be this little bit of extra energy left over after the process.

  17. I agree with a point (around 1.24) from one of the theoretical scientists. The Universe is very simple, rather elegant in its simplicity.
In that vein, there is however a universal phenomenon that we observe: one model and one pattern within Nature that is always apparent, that is the absence of the unique, or the one of any something. Always there are many of everything that exists, never one of a kind. From the smallest ( where most abundance are found -sub-atomic) to the largest ( where relative fewer, but still many are found).

With modern humans placing themselves as separate and above Nature, the intellect has become somewhat of its own enemy, with the over analysis and complications resulting.

Therefore , a 'model' based on observable patterns, within our existing experience and available scientific knowledge, could be as simple as this:
For every visible Kosmos there is an 'invisible' anti-Kosmos that is separate from/(or, superimposed upon it??) with a form of magnetic field, separating matter and antimatter, thus forever forming an inseparable unit (until the magnetic shield is removed, of course) : -)
A perspective of multiverses and antiverses, interacting with ours and others, could therefore be a logical and worthwhile scientific investigation… Besides what exactly is a Uni -Verse? And why?, Who actually decided on the 'fact' of One-Verse as reality's truth? Surely the evidence contradicts the claim?

  18. These physicists really don't know anything. And more-so don't have the language to explain the ineffable, or the proper concepts to back the billions of spending on their foundation-less experiments. If you really want to hear some understanding, check out Nassim Haramein's work.
