The Medical Simulation Center – Loma Linda University

LomaLinda360

The Medical Simulation Center (MSC) is a state-of-the-art virtual hospital located on the 4th floor of the centennial complex at Loma Linda University in a space of 8,000 square feet, and can simultaneously accommodate 16 simulations. Each of the center’s training areas is designed to reflect the realities encountered in actual care settings, and is fully functional. When needed to increase the surge capacity of nearby medical facilities, the center is designed for rapid conversion to an emergency response center in the event of a disaster.

The center is a contiguous system designed to simulate the patient flow process with a pre-hospital room, emergency room, operating room, intensive care unit, obstetric operating room, neonatal intensive care room, hospital room, training room, and pharmacy. Each simulation room is connected to an observation/debriefing room separated by a one-way mirror with large flat-screen televisions to provide the live-stream observer participants with additional angles. Simulation sessions can be recorded and are immediately available for playback in either of the multimedia conference rooms.

The mobile simulation service provides simulations to outside areas including medical center patient rooms where simulation sessions can be controlled, recorded and viewed via state-of-the-art multimedia carts in the practitioner’s real environment.

Simulation is a training and feedback method in which learners practice tasks and processes in life-like circumstances using simulation manikins (different from “mannequins”). The simulators are full-size manikins whose major organ systems have been programmed to respond appropriately to a user’s interventions. The manikins are controlled by computer software at the control room or from an adjacent room. A variety of clinical settings may be replicated. Physiologic parameters that can be simulated include: ecg, invasive and non-invasive blood pressures, oxygen saturation, central venous pressure, pulmonary artery pressure, intracranial pressure, and body temperature.

Although scenarios are typically developed to match learner’s needs, many challenging scenarios are currently available for use at the simulation center. Students and practicing health care providers currently utilize the facility on a regular basis. The medical simulation center trains a wide array of professionals throughout the health care continuum, including the students from the school of medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, allied health, psychology and public health; staff throughout the medical center, pre-hospital care, as well as our surrounding community. Our clinical programs incorporate the latest technology by simulating a real clinical environment. Training also emphasizes essential safety aspects such as teamwork and communication. Extreme and challenging medical conditions with fidelity sufficient to achieve suspension of disbelief on the part of the trainee can be created on demand.

  1. Are you going to Loma Linda? Im a med student at another SDA university and we have this simulators which are just a huge blessing from Loma Linda University donations.

  2. Don't let anything stop you from your goals! I am 57 and decided to become a psychologist and am well on my way. Student loans makes that possible. I now have fallen into my unique little niche, which is the psychological benefits these simulation labs offer the health care worker. Rehearsal also utilizes implicit memory which enhances confidence and reduces medical errors.
