In today’s Lightning Round video, I cover the observer effect – and how everybody (including me) gets it wrong. Also, tech bros, black holes, Crispr and I hate being pale. It’ll all make sense when you watch, trust me.

  1. Thanks for this – it frustrates me when quantum mechanics gets translated into layman language, but then it seems to be pointing at something incredibly mystical. My understanding is – people have to stop thinking about particles as something you can see with your eyes, or a camera – it's not a softball, it needs specialized detectors, and those detectors in order to detect those things, also "hit" the object, so it's not that strange that these particles are affected by that physical detection process. Observer is just the wrong word.

  2. I reckon it would be irresponsible to have/develop further the "antibiotic" that reverses ageing. with that said I would kind agree to be healthy until my time comes but not live forever.
who would have access to it such an antibiotic ? not me not you, not the common joe.
i think i could live without getting bored a solid 380 years

  3. If the measurement always interacts then there is no observer effect there is just cause and effect, Why the outcome is like it is is still a question.

  4. It's a shame because the observer effect and all the wuwu quantum stuff is fun to use as metaphors and references when writing about unrelated things

I suppose as long as we remember the sort of romanticized misconception of it doesn't reflect on the original reference the way we thought….

  5. 12:00 I think that I would become a different person over time. Old memories would fade, new memories would form. Eventually I would be the kind of person to stop taking the pill, but I can't say when. And then I might become the kind of person to start taking it again before I died of old age.

  6. To the magic pill: given how much I've fallen apart in the last 2 years (I am now 37), I would absolutely take that pill… if this is 37, 45 seriously concerns me. However, i wouldn't take it forever, maybe just 5-10 years

  7. I blame scientists for the role of the observer effect in spirituality. They were not clear about how this effect works. I still see headlines from studies "WE DECIDE REALITY BY OBSERVING". Shut UP.

  8. The observer effect makes so sense. It’s the same as the question “if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?”

  9. I just saw another video showing how their assumption that interfering with the particle was changing the state (wave to particle) by using a crystal to deflect light instead of a detector. The analize the signal particle then the idler particle. The result still was the same. I don't remember if you mentioned that in this video, but it's definitely worth looking into.

  10. Hey Joe, I used to think this; interference creating decoherence. However decoherence doesn’t happen with detectors or quantum entanglement it’s the recording of the information. Check out delayed choice quantum eraser experiment and prepare for an hour of silence!…
