Artificial intelligence is reshaping every dimension of modern life, from scientific discovery and creative expression to national security, data governance, and global policy. As breakthroughs in fields such as natural language processing, statistical inference, biotechnology, and large‑scale computation accelerate, so too do urgent questions about AI’s impact on society.

In this Asimov Debate, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, convenes a uniquely interdisciplinary panel of pioneers: leaders in machine learning research, AI ethics, national security technology, data‑privacy law, statistical theory, and long‑term AI safety. This year’s panelists include Latanya Sweeney of Harvard University, Kate Crawford of the University of Southern California, Chris Callison-Burch of the University of Pennsylvania, Cynthia Rush of Columbia University, Nate Soares of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute, and Eric Schmidt, the former CEO and Chairman of Google. Together, they will examine how AI is transforming scientific practice, altering geopolitical power, challenging legal and ethical frameworks, and raising fundamental questions about human agency and control.
From the material infrastructure behind AI systems to issues of copyright, fairness, labor, privacy, and existential risk, these experts will debate the promises, pitfalls, and perils of an increasingly algorithmic world and explore what it will take to guide AI development responsibly for the future of humanity.
The late Dr. Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific and influential authors of our time, was a dear friend and supporter of the American Museum of Natural History. In his memory, the Hayden Planetarium is honored to host the annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate—generously endowed by relatives, friends, and admirers of Isaac Asimov and his work—bringing the finest minds in the world to the Museum each year to debate pressing questions on the frontier of scientific discovery.

FIX THE PROBLEMS FIRST!!
It may too late to make it safe. Humans first robots last
Whose moral laws will AI follow? They will feed it greed and control of humans
Musky already has all of our social security numbers. What will he do with them?!
The machines. And the machine makers have to have safety laws
I do not trust crazy musky
Google had our home in the wrong location for years and we couldn't get them to change
Google makes mistakes. AI will make BIG mistakes that will harm humans
Right on lady!
If our states already can't make regulate what AI does to us. It's already out of control
They are already making robots to go out and police us and be an army
AI is contributing to the demise of humans before a prompt is even written. We're at a point where we need to be sucking CO2 out of the atmosphere let alone net zero – and emissions are still on the up. Tech bros dont have a CARE IN THE WORLD about how data centres are powered and how much water they use.
This is underrated.
I asked AI why it cannot build a muultistoried data center and itnsaid weight of the servers. I asked it if you cannot build a solution of you problem then how is it intelligent and it changed the topic.
Someone correct me, but is the Harvard professor saying “before we worry about AI becoming the terminator let’s worry about it being racist, misogynistic, and otherwise bigoted 1st?”
Great video, thanks for sharing
Great group! Great discussion! But the problem will ALWAYS be PHYSICAL, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL "LEANINGS" of the PROGRAMMERS of these technologies.😂 EVERYTHING ELSE IS JUST – ENTERTAINMENT!😂
Neil- "Can't AI solve our AI problems?" …well, AI will convince that it has solved the problem, provide the pseudosolution, but under the hood, problems persists, multiply, morph..
Neil- If tech bros are influencing the laws, how much worse is that than tech-ignorant people who otherwise running the congress making the laws! – Anthropics CEO Dario Amodei says we understand about 3% of how Claude works (including himself and other humans at anthropic )…So, tech bros are also ignorant…3% understood tech is not worth releasing onto the world…imagine you only understood 3% of nuclear tech
UBI- Universal basic income is a pseudo-solution. UBI removed leverage. UBE-Universal Basic Energy is the right solution, it is based on first principles, and freeing, and retains and sustains the leverage with people.
Path of growth is stupid- we do not have enough resources, or platenary boundary limits left to walk this path of growth
If it is goin g to use our land, our air, our water, "we need to have a say in it". No Cynthia, we need the control over it. Not just say over it.
