Warp drives, negative mass, exotic matter – these all sound like the stuff of science fiction. But MIT explains how our stranger-than-fiction universe could be explained by actual physics!

Finally the principle or warp drive explained in a way my second neuron can comprehend! Thanks! I've been looking for this for quite some time.
Only question I have remaining: why would we have to expand space behind the ship? Wouldn't it expand "spontaneously" as in action = reaction, like the yellow thing? Contracting one side automatically expanded the other?
4:54 imagine going to the north star and when u arrive you can't find it because its destroyed
My brain exploded at about 4 minutes….I'll try to watch it again..in a few billion trizzillion years…
Trekkies clicking onto video: The excitement of my heart is beating faster than Warp 10
Trekkies at the end of the video: sad noises
I was hoping how the TNG warp core works but no one explains on youtube …..
You know, negative mass is sounds like 2 same magnet that force to unite. But instead unite they are seperate with enough push power
Big thank you as big as Jupiter
Would it cause time dilation .plz ans
Fascinating
If it occurs naturally, then Man will put it to use. It becomes a job for mathematicians and engineers.
Do one on the flying tic tacs.
Millenia away? Naw dude. Just one hundred years ago there were no such things a rocket ships, jet engines, internet, cell phones, television, etc. In just ONE HUNDRED YEARS! I bet we crack warp drive in around 150 to 300 years!!
Thumbs up for the slinky analogy….Feynman would be proud!
Sir can i use your video cllip for my video?
“Electric “ air, to control the Centrifugal/centripetal force.
Using a telescope/ microscope (with its mirrors) and laser propulsion for atoms(teleport/cloning) could create the “figurative”a warp drive.🤷♂️
Just a question: Just how is contracting space the easy part? I'm not trying to sound like a smartass over here, Im just curious.
Wrong it will not work like that the power requirement is too high. This is not a warp drive. A warp drive is a moving massless bipolar spacetime distortion field matrix moving though space instead of in space. What he is describing is contracting very large blocks of space that is not warp drive and it is not a wormhole so I do not know what it is.
(@ 4:33) …the ship would be basically unsteerable once you did.
Well maybe unsteerable or maybe not. If I were to drive a Tesla car 🚘 & put the destination of where I want to go on the GPS, the car WILL drive for me (no hands). Use the same idea on a Starship. If you tell the computer that you want to go to the North Star 🌟, the ship will obey your command & you WILL get there even if there’re steering in space.
The theory sounds great, but, but, but, do we have the technology to build a warp drive?
But will there be rice puddin
Guess we're just going to have to go it the old fashion way and be jello people when we reach Mars or farther, if the radiation doesn't kill us or micro meteors don't make the ship into Swiss cheese.
Well…that’s one way to crash an intergalactic party.
searl effect generator is negative mass
I love this😍
The problem is it not really expanding or shrinking space its pushing space behind us and ultimately we would move faster then light, the problem it find something to push against like a magnet gliding away from the opposite end.
My life is Startrek on my breaks, LIFE IS GOOD, im going on the new warp ship. 😉
How about creating a Hz bubble around the vehicle you travel on
Time is a concept of man. To measure events from beginning to end. Nothing more, nothing less.
I have a more basic possibility for medium to slow space travel in "jumps" you have your ship and in the back near the engine you have a spring chamber: these springs are compacted so that they return more energy than you put into them. So, you have like a metal ball and you push it into one of the springs in this chamber it pushes the ball back into the other spring and vice versa building up potential energy each time until you release it out the back of the ship and push yourself forwards very fast.
I feel smarter after watching this video. I actually learned a few this.
I am concerned to hear about ongoing research into warp drives while not concurrently hearing about research into Gellar Field generators. You do NOT want to do a warp jump unshielded guys.
Thanks alot, now i know how nasa would warp travel i was so confused before
Here we go with the big bang nonsense again. It's a theory created by a catholic priest. Then they throw around hypothetical theories about warping space with no proof. Prove things, then maybe you can be as arrogant as you are. They are already disproving parts of expansion theory. It's only a matter of time before they realize that the math works out perfectly if there is no expansion. Oh I know, let's create 11 dimensions to make the other theory work out mathematically. rolls eyes
This is where we fucked up with the human race. Instead of using slinkies and explaining things in practical ways to improve our understanding. We dump text books in front of kids and judge their performance on how well its been copied. Not how well they understand it.
Great video MIT
This is not the way warp drive works.
