Thinking it Over: Streaming consciousness

Yiska Out

With yet another incident happening in the Overwatch scene and yet again on streaming platforms for the whole world to see, it made me think of the nature of the streamers experience. These thoughts aren’t there to rationalize the entire Dafran situation in particular, nor are they even really closely related, but merely a fragment on what it means to be a streamer in the current climate and to hopefully evoke compassion where it is is applicable.

  1. this is an incredible video and i'm so glad you're thinking about these things consciously. sad to say it is a rarity in the OW scene not just among young edgy streamers but even the pro content creators at the top of the scene. i myself am happy to report that the fail rate of the mind filter, stopping the things that are harmful in their tracks before you spout them out, decreases GREATLY after years of practice. 7 years ago i made a conscious effort to hurt people less with my words, even if it was inadvertent, and filthy sjw though that may make me, now i have the power to spout bullshit nonsense for hours on end without accidentally saying things that actively cause harm in the real world (and i might still fail, the fail rate is not 0, but it has been years since i have been called on something ive said like that). i think the problem for some of these guys is not that they lack a meditative process or a filter, but that they don't necessarily understand WHY they need one. they don't take the time to think WHY some things are considered harmful, they just get blindly mad at the "other" for calling them out on it when it happens. it also doesn't help that they don't have anyone who they haven't already antagonised who HAS considered why some things are harmful. i wish they had someone who they respect, who they are already were invested in telling them the things you just talked about in this video.

  2. Wow this was an aggressively amazing video. Super interesting, insightful, just awesome. I have a question. I feel like I would be perfect as a streamer. I have a really quick and associative mind and I am always really fast at responding to stuff. I also am really good at multi-tasking, so I have always wanted to play a game while chat talks to me. The thing that sucks is I am not great at Overwatch. I love wathing it and I know the ins and outs, but I am playing at a platinum level and really have no path out of it that I think is reasonable. If I wanted to try pursing being an overwatch streamer, is it worth it at my level? Or would the gameplay be so low and boring that chat either wouldn't come/cair or would constantly be just angry at everyone playing for playing stupidly?
