Understanding Lighting – 3D Fundamentals

In this video, we are going to be learning about how to get started with lighting in 3D. It’s completely software agnostic; you can use any package you want. We cover the basics of how to make different kinds of lighting using simple tools. We also cover the FlippedNormals Lighting Scenes.

  1. Lighting is something I struggle with, it's so difficult to advance because it's so subjective and there are many subtle choices to make with every light.

Also: why render layers for the scene instead of render setup?

  2. Love the fact that you got a lot of theory on your tutorials, as opose to just showing how to use a software

  3. it'll be awesome of you guys if you cover more of ''organic modeling/sculpting'' stuff. really struggling with good forms in zbrush, sorry for insisting and keep bringing it up?

  4. I think the biggest thing people mess up is scene scale. It's imperative that objects are scaled properly. Changing scene units can (or at least use to) mess stuff up so I always work in cm and just multiply the grid scale by whatever I need to. Lighting is my favorite thing to do. But I think it's the icing on the cake. Focusing on an awesome material network is where I find myself spending the majority of my time. I'm obsessed with that stuff. haha. Great video!

  5. Nice to see someone talking about this stuff. If you used HDR Light Studio with Maya for this demo, it would have saved a lot of clicking and messing around, concentrating on the shot rather than messing around in 3D and guessing light positions. Not a criticism, just saying, let us know if you want a license to play with for this kind of demo. Regards Mark – Lightmap

  6. Awesome tutorial, thank you! Can anyone in the comment section tell me though: What is the sphere around everything good for, and how I can make one like that in Blender?

  7. If people don't know about basic studio lights, a quick Google will fill in (pardon the expression). I do like the nuance you give the discussion. That moonlight scene is scrumptious. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Wow, suggested a video a while ago on this topic and here it is. Awesome ๐Ÿ˜€ I also really like your tutorials, very engaging and fun. Kind of reminds me how i got started, with 3ฤ‘buzz tutorials

  9. Great video! It's good to see this quality in YouTube content. Would be nice to see some shading tutorials with V-Ray and Arnold. How do you guys do look development? I'd love to see your shading Workflow. I'm looking forward to watch more of your videos. Thank you ?

  10. Thank you so much for these videos. Working as an amateur in 3D, there is just SO much to learn, and you guys doing these software non-specific videos is a tremendous help.
