Alan Watts mentions about a very interesting point about consciousness. How should we interpret consciousness?
Alan Watts mentions that our common sense way of thinking about material world is highly influenced by the Aristotle’s work in his book Genesis. Alan Watts mentions that fundamentally we think that all forms are composed of some substance. For example – statues are made of stone, pots from clay etc.
Alan Watts mentions that modern physicist have propounded that the entire universe is not made of anything, rather the physical process of nature is patterns. Alan Watts says these are not patterns made of energy, rather the process of patterning is the same thing as energy.
Alan Watts then says that we must understand as a kind of patterning.
Alan Watts mentions that Universe is an energy field. A field is an arena where things happen. Similarly, consciousness is a field. Even in Physics, we have magnetic field, electric field, gravitational field. Alan Watts says all these are fields of forces of energy.
Alan Watts then says that fields exercise their energy field in a non-mechanical way. Alan Watts says if the field was not there, then gravity should have acted in a linear way – which means that gravity would have acted lower on an article placed above another article, as some gravity should have been absorbed by the article at the base.
But field acts uniformly and similarly, consciousness is uniform field. The world has energy, pattern and the field of consciousness.
