  1. You're my favorite linguistic channel! I love to listen to what you have to say about language 🙂 Thanks for all of your videos

  2. In Esperanto, there are naturalistic words "lingvisto" and "lingvistiko" for "linguist" and "linguistics", respectively, as well as schematic equivalents "lingvoscienco" and "lingvosciencisto". Though I normally prefer the use of schematic forms, I do use the naturalistic form "lingvistiko" here (and I use the more schematic derivative "lingvistikisto", instead of using a second radical "lingvist-" for no obvious reason), because linguistics is obviously a pseudoscience, starting with conclusions and trying to fit the data into proving those conclusions, rather than taking the data and letting it lead you to the conclusion, whether you personally like that conclusion or not.

A similar situation of course occurs in German, where you have Sprachwissenschaft and Sprachwissenschaftler alongside Linguistik and Linguist.

  3. I remember the first time I wanted to looked into linguistics was in the middle of English and my teacher was explaining to some kid about sentence structure. I sat there simply wondering, 'man who though of this,' then the wondering soon went to massive amazement when I keep thinking. Then in my head I was like,'OMFG WHAT IS THIS' it came to that from looking at sentence structure in Spanish and English. And compared other stuff and realized how amazing language is!

  4. As someone who studies foreign languages for fun, this is very interesting to me because some of the stuff you're talking about, I've picked up subconsciously, but I haven't thought about it in the methodical and structured way of linguistics. Very cool!

  5. Hi, I'm a pompous 22 year old douchebag, who thinks I know everything but really know jack shit. Pay attention to me with my condescending tone, and head bobble that makes me look like a fag.

  6. Hei! I'm interested in prehistory, once thought to study it geographically more wide, but there is SO MUCH material, over the years I've focused mainly in the prehistory of Finland. So I meet these linguists very often when reading books and debates. And there is a LOT of different opinions with them, they argue if the approach the other ones are using are correct, they disagree on results, they disagree what linguist methods can prove, what it can't. Recently there is this whole debate if the previously built proto-languages even ever existed, and if they did, what is the form of language tree/comb/bush.
I do not mean to say linguistics is ballony, not at all! Some people say psychology is nonsense, or its conclusions are… but let's just say that there seems to be a lot of conflicting opinions. What do you guys think about paleo-linguistics? In the recent decade I've been saying that I basically ignore what they say about the Finnic languages and contacts, if it goes a few centuries past written records. To me archaeology and genetics are much harder and believable sciences. At the moment, there are a few linguists who are very much into genetics, and many are writing new models of our still very much unknown prehistory. One of them is what I would call a propagandist, very active in Wikipedia and in discussion forums (built one forum himself) and very hostile (hatefully so) to anyone with different opinions. I do welcome them using genetics, which is also BTW very new developping field of science where a lot changes. But paleo-linguists' concept and startpoint to build models about prehistory basically is built around their view of language evolution, unlike with archaeologists whose models start from the archaeological findings. Prehistory is just a constant battle field of different opinions!
And no offence here meant to any linguists!

  7. Thanks for making this video that I can share with people when they ask "what is linguistics, anyway?" I love that it is short, to the point, but debunks the basic myths and gives a broad overview.
