What is quantum mechanics really all about?

Fermilab

Quantum mechanics is perhaps the most misunderstood of modern physics topics, with many counterintuitive concepts like cats being both alive and dead and with claims that something doesn’t exist until a human looks at it. In this video, Fermilab’s Dr. Don Lincoln boils quantum mechanics down to its essence and demystifies this mystifying theory.

  1. If you ask a dozen physicists what QM means, they will high light some aspect of the theory, like measurement problem or the wave function. The one I like most is proposed by Penrose. He considered quantum coherence, claiming it leads to consciousness. It also leads to life also and Maldacena claims it leads to entire universe.

  2. A book on quantum mechanics is the same as a sci-fi/fantasy novel. It is junk science, religion, sci-fi/fantasy with a pinch of actual science rolled into one. Much of it exists only in the heads of people who agree to treat it as real, just like gender studies students treat things like "cake gender".

  3. 5:03 – Why square the wave function? Why not quadruple it? What is it about squaring in particular for absolute values that would give you an idea as to where the subatomic particle is?

  4. Quick question… who cares where a moving object is at any given time? I thought quantum mechanics was about subatomic particles "popping" in and out of existence.

  5. I appreciate Don's honesty about these things. It's one of the main reasons I keep coming back to there videos. To clear up the woo woo. I wish all physicists would be 100% clear about what physics does and doesn't know. Same with astronomy.

  6. Very interesting. So a particle Canberra in numerous places until the wave form collapses via detection. Isn't this verifying that until detection the particle Isn't determined hence then reality formation?

  8. THE DAY SCIENCE BEGAN STUDYING NON PHYSICAL PHENOMENA IT WILL MAKE MORE PROGRESS IN ONE DECADE THAN IN ALL PREVIOUS CENTURY'S OF IT'S EXISTENCE

    Nikola Tesla quote

  9. My car was all bashed up. I took it to a Quantum mechanic.
He told me , "No 2 Fermions can occupy the same quantum state simultaneously"

  10. "Nothing is "real" before its observed"?
Well then it can not ever be observed! Lol.

According to that theroy nothing exists…. even though that mind does, so we are nothing but a hallucination created from nothing.
    How's that for philosophy?
    Ha Ha Ha.
    😃

  11. THANK YOU PROFESSOR LINCOLN…!!!
    A QUANTUM Doubt :
IS N'T IT ,Everything in the Universe is of ENERGY that is discretely in different phases and measures exist in the matter…???
If so, every matter has a half life , that disintegrate and dissipate according to what phase it is in.
When it is expired the energy has to be in wave form to spread out and be part of equilibrium in the universe…and PRAPANCHAM …to be recycled…reincarnate differently in SPACE AND TIME …!!! RIGHT…???
THANKS AGAIN PROFESSOR for considering my intuition…!!!

  12. Another thing:The wave function is not just a mathematical construct. If it were just a mathematical construct then no markings would be left on the photographic film at the back of the experiment.Another thing:Since atoms and their components are too small to be seen by the human eye,I wonder how physicists can see the interference pattern (or the two collapsed columns) on the photographic film at the back of the double slit experiment. As far as I know the only way to see those markings would be to place the photographic film under an electron microscope after they run the experiment. Also people should not deny that the results of the double slit experiment is bizarre because bizarre is ALREADY out there. The void that the universe exploded out of and is now expanding into is bizarre. Also "spooky action at a distance" has also been confirmed and THAT'S also bizarre.

  13. By watching this episode explaining the ambiguity of QM, and how even reputed scientists aren't able to tell with objectivity what this riddle is all about, I can't help but wonder. It seems that the wave function is just a rule of thumb for calculating something that is fundamentally unknown. It works, but it doesn't explain what's being done exactly. They need to come up with something consistent and sensible, not just some gimmick. It's like they found the answer, they found a theorem that is right, but they can't prove it.

  14. It appears the homeless population of the town where this video was produced, got into the auditorium and doodled on the blackboard all night.

  15. It would be interesting to hear more about your view of the observer influencing reality. I understood that you deny this concept. Thank you for very clear explanation of the basics of QM. QM truly shows how everything is interconnected and interacts with one another all the time.

  16. Max Born answered the question but you don't know. The "wave" is a wave of probability of the particle's position at any one instant.
Also quantum means indivisible. One cannot subdivide a quantum particle.
Finally a single quantum particle in motion is NOT in many places at the same time. A single particle always remains single. Its just that when moving we can only give probabilities for its position by the height of its wave function (which is a wave of probability).

  17. Could it be that squaring the wave function reveals something about the nature of it? After all, squaring things usually reveals some sort of geometric truth involved, like area.

  18. Mmm, lets see, if I watch this 20 times…..
What is all this about the probability of a particle being at a location? This seems to make the whole a guessing game, WHY?

  19. Maybe I’m wrong but in my understanding of the many worlds interpretation the measurement doesn’t create a new universe, the measurement just tune the particle in the same wave function as all we are. And that give us the feeling of the existence of other universes in another wave functions.
