“You should practice the fundamentals in order to get better,” is common advice given to people who want to improve their drawings. It’s great advice. It’s something everyone should do.
The problem isn’t practicing the fundamentals, the problem is, not knowing what the fundamentals are. After being given the advice, you sit there wondering, “what are the drawing fundamentals?” You can’t study them if you don’t know what they are.
I decided to remedy this problem by making this video. It should not only answer what the fundamentals are, but also what each fundamental is and why it’s important to learn.

Hi Luis, what's a good book on gesture drawing? I've yet to find a good one.
i took on trying to learn drawing in march but i gave up after a month bc i really struggled with putting on that straight line which made me struggle tons with drawing simple shapes and it was driving me crazy, especially squares. i think i’ll glove it another go but first focus only on finding the right way to draw the line
That was very informative, thank you so much
Thank you. Finding your website has resparked my interest in drawing and art. I dropped off for a long time. Thank you so much for reinvigorating me.
To learn these fundamentals check out drawabox very good ressource
I know I'm kinda late but, me and my friend is feeling kinda hopeless in learning to draw, is it possible to learn in an age older than 10?😕
Thank you soooo much many videos I watch the you always say learn the fundamentals but never teach you what they are
This is the best drawing channel and site I have found. The issue I have and I see a lot of others having is knowing when you actually have mastered a fundamental enough to move on to something else.
I know I can draw a line, it is dead simple but how do I know that the line I can draw is good enough to use for creating a shape? This is the missing piece that drawing lessons lack. Even if it is subjective, which is the answer I get over and over, if drawing is in fact technical then by that definition there has to be a breakpoint that defines quality.
What is needed is an example of "good enough to tackle the next concept". That is not to say that you just drop the present concept but instead means that right now you can do this good enough to split your time on another concept as well.
Thanks Luis truly thank you for the time and effort you put in to spreading the ability to draw cool things.
Hi Jesus.
Is it better to learn at a young age? Can anyone learn? I used to so enjoy drawing and coloring, however I completely let life take over and never pursued it. Now I’m wanting to dive right in with out a single clue
When I try to simply the objects in front of me, I encounter serious difficulties.
And I still wonder how do you combine forms to create a mecha for example.
I can copy a photograph accurately but when I must draw my own characters or landscapes that's honestly not balanced and 3D is absent.
Hi.
First of all thank you for your tutorials.
Here is my problem and i hope you can help me.
I have picked up drawing 2 months ago and i have this 1 problem when i do straights they tend to go off in a little bit of degree like they are straight but I want them to be in 0 degrees they will be 3 degrees off. So when I do something like square which is essential fundamental it will look off. My guess would be lack of practice.
And also sometimes when i do straights they will become curves i think it's because my hand is used to the C curves that it will do it sometimes.
I hope you can understand my problem.
Again thanks for the great website and your tutorials.
very helpful, thank you
Wow one of the best drawing advice videos I’ve seen on this website. And I’ve watched a ton lol.
i was just watching lots and lots of art videos just trying to find out as much as i can, so many talented people. then i find this guy. "i'm luis escobar storyboard artist from the simpsons" say no more, this is the final boss
Ive been watching the simpsons recently from season 1, Also thank you FOR this I hate how no one discusses where to start its kinda frustrating because you end up trying to do everything.
As a self-taught beginner I have been struggling with drawing mostly due to the lack of clear indications as to what I should do first and why. Now thanks to your lessons and to your book recommendations I finally found the way to go and I can start practicing with purpose and without wasting more time. I'm really grateful for what you do!
Also, thank you very much for this informative video.
finally i got the video what exactly i want from you. thanks
I am a begginer and video like these are always appreciated, thank you for sharing your skills and your knowledge, hope you get more visibility soon you really deserve it.
