12. After having a grey out experience from lifting too heavy a weight, I'm now convinced that consciousness is simply the ability to discern relevance. All else are simply physical signals converted to brain signals. Without consciousness to judge and place things, those signals seem almost meaningless and treated as such by the body. The body locks in place, heart beating, senses firing, memory recording, but no one is at home to place a value on anything, at least until the forebrain becomes sufficiently oxygenated to turn on again.
