“Why did they paint so many naked people?” my 7 year old wanted to know after watching a video with me about the artist Jan Van Eyck (1400’s).

Side note: I can’t tell you how much I love the fact that he wants to watch art history videos with me!

“I don’t know, I guess they just like painting naked people,” I said, and we had a laugh.

But I figured I could give a better answer than that, so I did some research (er, googling.) Here are some interesting points.

Jan van Eyck Famous Nude surreal conceptual Art
Greek art was the first instance of nudity being perceived as representing strength and heroism. Other civilizations have depicted nudity in their art before, but it was always a sign of weakness, shame or humiliation. The Greeks, however, saw it as a sign of moral virtue, timeless beauty, and heroism. Side note: Greek athletes competed in the nude!

Following the fall of Rome and the rise of the Middle Ages, nudity in art once again connoted corruption and sin, and the Christian shame for the fallen state of humanity. Displays of artistic nudity were less common, although paintings of saints and the resurrection did also use nudity to symbolize the triumph of the spiritually purified body.

The Renaissance (1400–1500’s) saw the rise of Humanism and the rebirth of Classical Greek and Roman culture. Even in Christian art, many felt that the perfection of the nude human form was the purest expression of the divine. After all, man was created in the image of God.

Nudity in Christian art can be categorized in 4 ways:

1. Nuditas naturalis, representing the natural state of humanity before the Fall.
2. Nuditas temporalis, depicting poverty, and the reliance on God for all that we receive.
3. Nuditas virtualis, symbolizing purity and innocence.
4. Nuditas criminalis, representing the horror of lustful passions and vanity.

And who is so barbarous as not to understand that the foot of a man is nobler than his shoe, and his skin nobler than that of the sheep with which he is clothed. (Michelangelo)

…OK friends, that’s all I’ve got for you today. What can you add?

Botticelli had the right idea about depicting women. A woman’s beauty lies in her skin, her hair, and her eyes.

He was so enamored by them (women) that he spent most of his time painting them, laying on naked models while they were sleeping so he could study form without awakening them. A true artist works with all their senses working together to create art from within.

Approximately 25,000 works created by Jan Van Eyck, we only have about 60 master works remaining because most of them have been lost or destroyed over time.

The “Mona Lisa” is one example of this artist’s work. A copy can be seen in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France and another copy can be seen at London’s National Gallery in England.
