This video is just a brief explanation of conceptual metaphor theory and why I think it is an important field of study. :]

  1. J J, Douglas Hofstadter beat you to the punch.
Hofstadter has said that all human thought is in analogies, and most of those analogies do not make sense.
You can find some of his lectures on YouTube.
    : – )

  2. Something that's always confused me about the metaphors we use for time in English is when an event is rescheduled to a later date, people say that the event date is "moved back" despite the fact that we usually talk about later dates being "forward" in time. And when an event is rescheduled to an earlier date, people say that date has been "moved up". That's even more confusing. If, as in most other contexts, earlier dates are "back" in time and later dates are "forward" in time, how did we come to describe events rescheduled to earlier dates as having been moved "up"?

  3. Hey,

Crazy thoughts comin' at you at supersonic speeds:

I'm contrasting your eyes lighting up when talking about indigenous peoples' tendencies to anthropomorphize the world "giving" them things whilst estimating your perspective on the WASP religious saying their omnipresent gods "gave" them things and moments. It seems your bias may be rooted in the way the meaning of light and dark are metaphorically inverted in academia spiced with social justice. How do you reconcile your up arrow with your down arrow?

  4. i hope you make more videos about linguistics because it's my favourite thing!!!! Also, i appreciate the book rec because i haven't studied it formally and it can be hard to choose good ones. And i'd love to hear about the paper you wrote on Trump.

  5. But on a more serious note, great video. Do you have to take anthropology of language classes? Do you feel like there's a lot of crossover with sociology and philosophy in your degree?

  6. This was so fascinating to learn about. You’re so easy to listen to in the way you describe things and give your opinions and break things down for everyone to understand! Subbed!
