You aren't at the mercy of your emotions — your brain creates them | Lisa Feldman Barrett

TED

Can you look at someone’s face and know what they’re feeling? Does everyone experience happiness, sadness and anxiety the same way? What are emotions anyway? For the past 25 years, psychology professor Lisa Feldman Barrett has mapped facial expressions, scanned brains and analyzed hundreds of physiology studies to understand what emotions really are. She shares the results of her exhaustive research — and explains how we may have more control over our emotions than we think.

  1. How is this different from rationalizing your emotions? My understanding was that emotions are meant to be felt, not thought. Is she just saying to reframe our interpretation of our emotions?

  2. If you change your thoughts, you change your emotions. If you're feeling bad, it's because you were thinking negative thoughts prior to these feelings, you just didn't detect the thoughts…pay attention and you'll notice!

  3. I have genetic depression and anxiety. I'm not imaging that. I have the evidence to support the statement as a fact. But, how I deal with my thoughts ("predictions") may help me to feel a lot better about the world.

  4. Great lecture, totally agree with Lisa. How do you think people are going to cope with taking control and responsibility of their emotions, when we have created a victim society and being a victim you get rewarded.

  5. Orthodox Psychologists are dogmatically blaming the Mind" or the Brain. Cultural Conditioning is determined by our Cultural Engineers. Who are these "people"?

  6. public opinion🤔 Unfortunately the problem is not public opinion, most people never had an opinion they function on stimulus & response 😥 social media Facebook or twitter / the problem is reason, minds; the public has stops thinking , they no longer reason; they had a little bit of sense a few decades ago, now that's is going🎈 you have today an emotional mass of individuals globally / no reason no thinking or logic- just emosions, in all social classes from the poor to the rich from the middle class to the upper class . makes no different what any media outlet say's Facebook comments even twitter poems and hackers dreams you have on your hands a global mass of individuals that their reasonable brain has stop. it no longer functions- today they have the emotional brain that is doing the working ⚒ / indirectly & directed by what they perceive as images/ text on social media & main media outlets films & television. they behave in consequence to virtual perceptions 🧐👽 reality no longer exist😥
