  1. Sages have known this truth thousands of years ago “the world exists in our mind, an illusion made up by imagination’ it does not exist outside, independently. The problem arises in believing we are our physical body, which inevitably leads to the belief that the physical world exists independently. However our experience everyday, during the state of consciousness called dream, our mind creates a different identity “dream body” that comes with a dream world equally complex and totally believable in that state. We know that dream body and accompanying complex world was created by our mind because we know we have not left the room and wake up in the same bed. We also know that the physical world we see in the so called normal state of consciousness disappears in the dream state and reappears simultaneously when we wake up. If the physical world existed independently of our conscious mind, what is preventing it from appearing in other states of our consciousness?

  2. Here's one not so mind boggling. EEGs are outdated. The basic technique of measuring electrical activity has limitations. Some way of taking measurements, not just observations, with a number of independent devices all at the same time, like brainwave, chemical, EEG, MRI, and perhaps others. My own experience with temporal lobe epilepsy has made it more than clear that what's available now, to observe and measure, has very significant limitations.

  3. Ok. I can accept the idea of illusion. So, can something happen when something brings back a memory that makes the recollection nearly identical to one of the earliest memories. Thus, when we think our memory of something that happened decades ago seems to be unusually accurate, there may be a good reason other than self-deception. Think of the analogy of small town roads as compared to the highway. We're traveling on our highway. Something catches our attention, and we decide to take the next exit. The thing that made us check out what we thought might be there turns out to be uncannily similar to what we anticipated. Should we have any reason to believe that what just happened is anything more than a coincidence?

  4. The first picture of the dress I seen a yellow and black the yellow pixelated picture I seen as blue and black and then when it went back I seen it as blue and black again in the first picture I do work outside all the time but how does that make sense

  5. So am I special that I can look dead forward and see what my peripherals perfectly I always see everything I always notice everything I always notice everything it can be annoying sometimes but my peripheral vision is perfectly clear well looking dead forward

  6. So all that we perceive is input from our senses assembled into our picture of perception. Now then, when we dream a exact copy of reality happens complete with a bizarre narrative that we fail to question, or remember the details of self that arises from our "waking" life and then 5 seconds after we are awake the door to the dream memory closes yet every detail is still there. This is the real power of the brain, it creates worlds, people to fill them (with a complete life story and ancestry), and a fully orchestrated script, all without one blip of sensory input….. Nova, hire me and I will really blow your minds!

  7. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) cured my Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) after 38 years of suffering. Go science!!!!

  8. It’s all inner. It’s all beliefs which creates thought, which create emotion, which create actions. We create from the now, not from the past.

  9. As a visual artist and softball player I totally agree with the info presented here. Anyone every hear of Josef Albers? (Color theory.) How can l run to the correct location under a flyball to catch it? (Predictive inference.) Our brains are amazing, but at the same time they fool us all of the time. Every single day. Best bet: NEVER ASSUME.

  10. There's NO such "thing" as a "mind" like a "rock". This verbalized utterance by humans and only a function of human language is a label for the processing of the 5 senses, with the sole purpose of survival of this human meat popsicle. 😁 namaskaram

  11. Most excellent! (long-time NOVA fan, like many other commenters)
What a great question: "Where do thoughts come from?" Dr. Macknik nailed it. I actually tend to think of my brain as more of a translator that allows the limited body my immense essence is stuck in to comprehend and interact in this physical world. When the old brain is dead, I'll still be around (often wonder what i was like before i showed up here 🤔🙃)
BTW, had a hard time seeing the dress in gold, and your background change didn't help at all. Only saw gray cars, heard the same sound, & heard neither "yanni" nor "laurel". I think my brain is broken. 🤪 or i'm a ninja and have retrained my brain.
Now GOTTA go find a NOVA special on synesthesia!!! 🤯 😃

  12. I'm addicted to this content. I read a book with similar content, and I'm absolutely hooked on it. "Unlocking the Brain's Full Potential" by Alexander Sterling

  13. I think it's hilarious that science is still playing catchup with religion. There is a difference between the heart/soul/mind or whatever you want to call it and your intellect/brain/perception.
