Weekly Round-Up: Court allows Kartel appeal…New ECJ head…King Alarm guards penalised

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade on Tuesday announced that it will be establishing a taskforce to address the safety and security concerns of returning residents seeking to live, work, and conduct business in Jamaica.

The move comes against the background of recent attacks on returning residents and the concerns expressed by the Diaspora.

On Wednesday, Glasspole Brown was unanimously recommended by the commissioners of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ) to take over the reins at the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ).

Managing director of King Alarm, John Azar on Thursday announced punitive actions taken against the company’s security guards who were seen in widely circulated videos, engaged in a physical encounter with a licensed firearm holder last Monday.

The female guard seen kicking the man has been dismissed from the company, while two of her colleagues are to face a disciplinary hearing. The fourth guard, who was the supervisor, has been suspended.

In sport, it was on Monday announced that Olympic Bronze medallist, Warren Weir has joined the Jamaica’s Rugby Sevens team and will make his debut at the upcoming CAC Games slated for July 19 to August 3, 2018 in Barranquilla, Colombia.
