A City of Intelligent Machines – Jason Kelly Johnson

AA School of Architecture

23rd January 2015
DRL Keynote Lecture 2

The work of Jason Kelly Johnson forecasts an emerging world in which ecologies of intelligent machines will play not only a technical role, but also a creative and collaborative role in the evolution of our urban environments. Johnson’s Future Cities Lab is at the forefront of exploring how advanced technologies, robotics, social media and the internet of things will profoundly transform how we live, work, communicate, interact and play in the future. As a part of the lab’s core research agenda they synthesize past, present and future trajectories into radically synthetic forms of architectural production, interaction and participation.
Jason Kelly Johnson is the co-founder of Future Cities Lab, an experimental design research office based in San Francisco, California. Since 2009 Jason’s lab has produced a range of innovative projects exploring the intersections of design with advanced fabrication technologies, robotics, responsive building systems and public space. Jason is also an Assistant Professor of Architecture and Robotics at the CCA in San Francisco, where he co-coordinates the Digital Craft Lab and leads the Creative Architecture Machines advanced studio.
