Director”s statement
I have always been curious about science and its various manifestations and investigations that push our threshold of knowledge above current limits. The level of competence of artificial intelligence and whether robots would one day be able to feel emotions like humans do are aspects of the scientific endeavor I am particularly interested in. But with the attainment of sentience from machines, another question has arisen in my mind – should we grant robots the same “human rights” their biological counterparts enjoy, at least in the developed world? These questions, and their potential answers, motivated me in the first place to develop Autonomous.

I am as much interested in the human drama unfolding on screen as I am in the action. I wanted the atmosphere to be dark and gritty, emphasizing the hero”s inner feelings and emotional turbulence, and his eventual transformation. Without negating the film”s action and thriller aspects, I wanted Autonomous to tell primarily a story about the human condition and thus, the human story to be in the foreground. The pacing of the film was deliberate and I wanted the pace to build up gradually as the drama unfolds. We achieved changes in mood and pacing aurally through sound and music, and visually through lighting and the use of handheld camera in the second half of the film.

Director”s Bio
George Varotsis was born in Athens, Greece, and studied Industrial Management (BSc), Fiction Film Production (MA), and Cognitive Narrative Theory & Narratology (PhD), while his revised doctoral thesis, entitled “Screenplay and Narrative Theory” is now published by Lexington Books.

George has been involved in the production of TV commercials, TV dramas and feature films in various roles. In 2005, he co-founded Split Second Film Productions in London, which he left in 2008 to pursue freelance film production opportunities.

He”s member of the Greek Screenwriters Guild (GSG) and he”s been a visiting lecturer at Regent”s University and the Central Film School, both in London, the University of Birmingham and at the Henley Business School of the University of Reading.

George has written, produced and directed short films while he”s making his foray into TV commercials. He”s represented as writer/director by Jake Friedman at Scenario Los Angeles.

  25. I don't know if we watched the same video, but the audio was fine for me. You have to watch it in 1080p, because you also get a better audio bitrate that way!

  33. Liked the concept. However, I wonder why he started acting "robotic" at the end ie: jerky movements, "twitches", and the like. Didn't seem realistic enough. If he had been continuing to act as a wounded man with the electronics becoming visible for his discovery, then it would have tied in so much better. Overall good concept.

  38. I have to emphasize on that the dialogue was unclear. the music was to loud, there was about 30% of the dialogue I couldn't make out because the music was to loud.
    overall it was great, but bacground music needs to be just that, background music. not the primary sound where it drowns out dialogue and special effect sounds.

  41. very bad soundmix. dialog rarely understandable. otherwise a good story told by good actors. the sparepart room should have had more light so the viewer could see what this recycler was about. also i would have liked to see a more mechanical slaughter/ disassembly of the robot. show the mechanical brutality similar to what they do to animals in slaughter houses. but all in all good to watch. here is a feelgood story . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BzTjyh_JDQ
