Andy Clarke's thoughts and books are such a direct reflection of Gibsonian thought it is annoying he never recognies this. If not a direct source, he should at least address his predecesors in the ecological psychology movement who have pushed long and hard for such an "externalist" form of embodiment (aka "perception-action" approach) since at least the early 80s when Fodor & Pylyshyn were taken to task by Turvey, Shaw, Mace & Reed (in Cognition). Come on Andy, address direct perception!
Gibson's view as I understand it is that the representational content of perceptions consist in affordances for action. If there's any commonality in their two views its too weak to be worth mentioning.
Clark advocates a 'minimalist' version of internal representation- action oriented representations- timely 'off-line' anticipatory, counter-factual, predictive depictions used for guidance, administration and decision making as it relates to action at hand. Much akin to Rick Brush's notion emulation (2x chessboard analogy). I'm pretty sure Clark is little concerned with philosophical dotings on mediated signal pressing- direct vs. indirect perception…
