Defending Earth from Asteroids with Neil deGrasse Tyson

American Museum of Natural History

There are about a million near-Earth asteroids that are large enough to substantially damage or destroy a major city, as evidenced by the explosion over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in February 2013 of a meteor no bigger than a large truck, which injured more than 1,000 people.

With current space technology, scientists know how to deflect the majority of hazardous near-Earth objects. But prevention is only possible if nations work together on detection and deflection. Learn about the risks, and the steps that are needed to avoid these potential natural disasters, from a group of astronauts and cosmonauts who recently helped develop recommendations to the United Nations for defending Earth from asteroid impact in this discussion.

This program, which was streamed live on the web, took place at the American Museum of Natural History on October 25, 2013, the same week the United Nations General Assembly adopted measures creating an international decision-making mechanism for planetary asteroid defense. The event was co-hosted by the American Museum of Natural History and the Association of Space Explorers (ASE).

Neil deGrasse Tyson, who is the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, hosted the discussion with participants Thomas Jones, former NASA astronaut, senior research scientist at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, and Association of Space Explorers (ASE) Near Earth Objects Committee member; Russell Schweickart, former NASA astronaut, ASE co-founder and Near Earth Objects Committee member, and co-founder and chairman emeritus of the B612 Foundation; Dumitru-Dorin Prunariu, former Romanian astronaut, ASE co-founder and Near Earth Objects Committee member, and vice president of the European International Institute for Risk, Security, and Communication Management; Edward Lu, former NASA astronaut, ASE Near Earth Objects Committee member, and co-founder, chairman, and CEO of the B612 Foundation; and Soichi Noguchi, engineer and JAXA astronaut, and ASE Near Earth Objects Committee member.

  1. Dear panel of scientist…this video is a little getting older now….it is now the year 2020….can I ask how much development have there been so far as far s deflecting the real threatening asteroid ( that’s asteroid Apophis ) that’s on its direct path in our galaxy towards earth….and where are you now with this international space program with its deflection before it makes its first pass on earth by 13th April 2029…..do we have a big chance of surviving it with its second pass on same date on 2036 even if it’s only deflected a tiny little away from earth at least before 2029…..can you give us a little bit more honest information please..>

  2. How can you do something it universe laws if you want to change that you have to change the universe laws and there is no science or technology change that and the comet will hit earth when the end of times to closed.

  3. well sir, you were able to vibrate the chip in your radioset on the moon flights. i suggest reducing it to dust with a loud radio laser bursts the way we extract a tumor. or clean dental l instruments..ultra sound..no icbm warheads in space until last minute. we can only calculate death that way too.

  4. The images shown at around 15:00 of the injuries sustained by the local populations affected by the Chelyabinsk meteor Event in Russia were caused by the effects preceding the atmospheric impact, rather than the meteor itself.

The Chelyabinsk meteor was a superbolide that entered Earth's atmosphere over Russia on February 15th. 2013 at about 09:20 YEKT (03:20 UTC).

    It was caused by an approximately 20 m (66 ft) near-Earth asteroid with a speed of 19.16 ± 0.15 kilometres per second (60,000–69,000 km/h or 40,000–42,900 mph).

It was so sudden and brilliant, the light from the meteor was brighter than the Sun.

It was even visible up to 100 km (62 mi) away.

Observed over a wide area of the region and in neighboring Republics, one eyewitnesses claimed to feel intense heat from the fireball.

You've undoubtedly seen plenty of YouTube videos about it lol there are MANY. 🌠

Because of its high velocity and shallow angle when it entered the atmosphere, it exploded in an, "air burst," over Chelyabinsk Oblast, about 29.½ km up. (18.5 mi; 97,000 ft).

The explosion generated a bright flash, producing a hot cloud of dust and gas that penetrated to 26.2 km (16.3 mi), and many surviving small fragmentary meteorites, as well as a large shock wave.

The bulk of the object's energy was absorbed by the atmosphere, with a total kinetic energy before atmospheric impact estimated from infrasound and seismic measurements to be equivalent to the blast yield of 400–500 kilotons of TNT. (Or; 26 to 33 times as much energy as that released from the atomic bomb detonated at Hiroshima.)

Because the object went undetected before entering the atmosphere, mostly because its radiant was close to the Sun, the explosion created panic among local residents, and about 1,500 people were injured seriously enough to seek medical treatment.

All of the injuries were due to indirect effects rather than the meteor itself, mainly from broken glass from windows that were blown in when the shock wave arrived, minutes after the flash.

Some 7,200 buildings in six cities across the region were damaged by the explosion's shock wave, but people saw a bright flash and naturally went directly to the nearest window to look outside lol and, "investigate."

Clearly, this presents a rare but significant opportunity for the rest of the world to learn what NOT to do in a similar situation lol if you see a flash brighter than the Sun, the LAST thing you want to do is go looking out the window! 😂

  5. We could just mine the asteroids for minerals as we build more structures during our expansion further out into the solar system. Eventually they will all be used up and we will not have any worries about giant objects hurling down to earth.

  6. I wonder, why there hasn’t been pronounced, at least one time, the possible hazards that it could have to the future terrorist’s actions in this sphere. As history teaches us all, human beings throughout its history have been constantly searching for easiest and cheapest ways to eliminate the other humans at the bigger scale. And if there are some who are determined to protect us from the global problems and, maybe, even from the extinction of our species, there are also always, whose thinkable capabilities are aiming to the opposite direction, even if the result of such actions could be the absolute global Armageddon. But let see not so much in future time concerning the Armageddon type asteroid events. Let see, what possibly some “bad guys” can do in this sphere in the relatively nearest future. Once you have managed to calculate the precise characteristics of all asteroids and its orbits that matter, and then you’re deciding to publish it publically, thereby you have already resolved one big problem to some potential “bad guys”. I see no any reasons, why such results couldn’t be classified ( comparing to the nuclear research, chemical and biological weapons research and etc. ) , or at least the data concerning the main potential dangerous city-destroyer's type asteroids, or the asteroids which orbits could be practically Earth-dangerously diverted and then purposely directed within the reach of the presumable human’s technical capabilities in the observing future. Let’s imagine, that some “bad guys” in the future, armed with the knowledge of all the characteristics of asteroids, under the cover of some private cosmic company mission elaborate and launch some “technical decision” to one particular asteroid, the “decision” that can alter the orbit of the asteroid and with calculated possibility can direct it to the chosen area of some country on Earth. And if such precision of this technical capabilities is within the reach of the human beings in the nearest future, you could hardly have imagined the more best weapon, either for governments or for the terrorists. Then all you have to do is to maximally camouflage your actions and try to remain undetected.

  7. I call the threats "CAMM's", or comets, asteroids, meteors & meteorites. I propose building ground based earth to space projectile interceptors. Large, heavy, heavy metal rounds (RODS FROM GOD). Launched from earth these kinetic impactor's utilize speed and mass to quickly divert the incoming impact threats trajectory, away from earth. Multiple smaller projectiles intersect the CAMM's in space. Launching from earth would be cheaper. What say you?

  8. The US govt is essentially a teenager. Maxing out the credit card (national debt), and playing havoc with trade economies and international relations (testing their boundaries)… NASA currently gets less than 0.5% of the total national budget… we should seriously tax religious donations, drop all wealthy tax dodges, and really put a % on the federal tax. THEN give more like a 15% chunk of annual budget to NASA.

  9. Dear Panel of Scientists:….I think the numbers 2036/ the year 2036 which is the second pass of Apophis that will going to be, is a message from the God in the heavens expressing Gods anger to mankind, as it seem to say a message…Here it’s showing that by adding all this numbers as following: 2036 is saying….2+0. is 2….3+6. is 9. then add it all up….2+0+3+6. is 11….so that’s …2 9 11. ( like ..t(w)o 9 / 11…. what do you think….please excuse this ? insanity, maybe….I’m just simply looking at its numerology, which DR Tyson mentioned in one of his video at a lecture in UW, ….that numerology is a universal language…..sorry…I’m signing off for now…

  10. Neil suggests that each country could donate some amount directly related to their GDP (or other measure of wealth/production), but aren't certain countries more or less likely to be impacted by these asteroids? For a smaller asteroid that is a city-destroyer, wouldn't it make more sense to add a probabilistic component? Certainly, a larger asteroid that could cause an ice age would pose an equally likely risk to each area.

  11. From Space to GMO's……. Neil DeGrasse Tyson always seems to take the "government narrative", Gotta keep getting that grant and endorsement monies, government and Monsanto's loves you eh Neil.

I saw Tyson on another video trying to degrade open minded observations, and he was asked… How do you know the earth is round.. Tyson:" Their is video of it"..? Yeah, I can show you a video of King Kong, or alien, or the Star Ship Enterprise from space, are they real as well Neil, ask your buddy their Bob..?

That has got to be the worst imbecile argument I could have expected from an astrophysicists….! In his defense, I'm sure he meant that argument for the very intellectually challenged people that watch his NASA propaganda, to get and keep the masses laughing at other intellectual observations…..

What you should also note about the way Neil DeGrasse Tyson talks of other scientific arguments, is exactly how the scientific community debate, by mocking and slandering each others opinions..

That is why he brings comedians on with him. Which in my view, is a shamble of a community of open minded intelligent experts.. Where very valid arguments, can be shamed away for not lining up with current "theories". Even going to lengths of bringing on moronic comedian's to help laugh at other scientific observations..

Then at the end, Tyson goes on to say, "The People" don't know how to think and question things properly for themselves, and that you need his "type of training" to think and question things properly, and that if you don't have that type of training, you will run around believing anything and everything you hear…

Well tell me People, most all of us don't have Neil DeGrasse Tyson type of training, are you the type of People that run around believing anything and everything, are you as ideodic as he says you are.. Pathetically Shameful Science…

Stop watching the Discovery Channel to learn anything People.. Trust me, Neil DeGrasse Tyson didn't either. Intellect has nothing to do with schooling/education..

READ information..! Question everything, do experiments, watch independent experiments (Not on the discovery Channel), record your observations, and come to your own conclusions. Research and think critically with an open mind.

Also, I'm not a flat Earther, but I'm also not so egotistical as to think other peoples experiments, observations, and concluding arguments mean nothing, because of my educational statues, what I was lead to believe growing up, or what I saw on a video on T.V. …

  12. What a moron actor.. He probably still believes we made it to the moon.. Fact: "Gravity is a theory", Density is factual.. and is why different types of matter drop or rise compared to air, or water. Fact: astrophysicists are theorists.
