Digital semiotics: making sense of the world | Oscar Bastiaens | TEDxDordrecht

TEDx Talks

During his talk, Oscar will talk about how we are becoming more dependent on a super system of signs to still be able to make sense of the world we live in, and the world we are programming.

As a researcher in the field of Digital Semiotics, Oscar investigates what is real and what is simulated, and if our brain is more easily tricked than we might think.
While working together with the students of the NHTV Creative Lab in Breda, Oscar developed the world’s first fiction film for the Oculus Rift.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx .

  1. The idea that we look to digital data for meaning is insane – surely a few of us recognise that an algorithm can't possibly fathom the complexities of our communication. And why would it be desirable to effectively outsource notions of meaning to digital media? Digital technologies have changed the way we interact beyond imagining, but those powers have come from the human hands in engineering and the surface interactions, not the technology itself.

  2. "Big data," "semiotics," "virtual reality," "Baudrillard," "metanarrative," "digital media." Twelve minutes of incoherent word soup from someone who appears to have audited, but not fully grasped Communications 101.

  3. I feel sem-(-iotics/-iosis/-antics) is really necessary to make sense of data as an individual for conservation and or creation, or collectiveness as from same in antonym reasons. Figured the introduction, according to amount of inadequate and ubiquitous information “retrieved” in internet context, about concept is too much narrow and so that needs interaction!! (Provided example for FaceBook as from “artificial stupidity ‘quoted from Elon Musk” the provision from FaceBook is not narrowed by users, especially because there hasn’t been a reform for what is really values in FaceBook – spiritual and material values – 100% is life and realities) !! I want that there should be more classifications and for that the other keywords because I cherish, I always forever love certainty (and antonym) in a conscious ratio. Those classifications can happen with that help with Digital Semantics, thank you, initiator, for that coopetition help {symbols to have no context impact but exclusive with the text in content} {I agree with the comments beside the video but I appreciate how you solve your cases gently, just to know about me, I note that you should resolve entirely your idea(s) in algorithm via aspect diagram, projectively, for users to interacts upon} wishing you all best affirmations you need
