Mind-Body Healing through the Arts Series: Music and the End of Life Care | The New School

Music & the End of Life Care is hosted by the certificate program in Creative Arts and Health at The New School (http://www.newschool.edu/public-engagement/creative-arts-and-health-certificate). The featured speaker is Jayne Demakos, MA, a certified Therapeutic Harp Practitioner through the International Harp Therapy Program. She studied Contemplative Music and Music Thanatology under Therese Schroeder-Sheker and is coordinator of the music program at Hospicare and Palliative Care Services of Tompkins County. Jayne consulted and performed for the World Conference of Religions through Cornell University and two Interfaith Services in Ithaca, NY honoring the Dalai Lama of Tibet. Whether as singer, pianist, harpist, teacher or choral director, Jayne strives to create an environment by which we can feel our shared humanity more deeply.

The New School for Public Engagement (http://www.newschool.edu/public-engagement) presents Mind-Body Healing through the Arts Series, moderated by New School Creative Arts and Health faculty Kelley Linhardt, MA, LCAT, ATR.

The field of creative arts and health is rapidly gaining recognition as an essential component of health care in our society. By tapping into the deeply expressive aspects of body, mind, and spirit through such modalities as music, sound, imagery, role, and movement, the therapist facilitates self-actualization and healing within the therapeutic relationship. Prominent practitioners demonstrate principles and practice in this series of experiential presentations.

  1. First learned of this with Therese Schroeder Sheker – this is such a blessing to those in hospice… I hope when it is my time to go that there will be the harp.
