Palette knives, rags, sponges, fingers–Courbet used a wide variety of tools to apply paint. He boasted that he could complete a landscape in two hours; the prominent brush and knife strokes on his paintings are records of his virtuoso “performance in paint.” In this short video artist Peter Zokosky demonstrates techniques Courbet may have used to paint such works as “The Grotto of Sarrazine.”
