Henri Matisse – The Joy of Life (1905-1906)

Henri Matisse (1869–1954) is a French artist, most famous for his use of color in his paintings.

In this video we’ll discuss one of his fauvist paintings “Le Bonheur de Vivre “, also known as “The Joy of Life”.

In this video we’ll first take a look at the painting itself. What do we see? What can we say about the composition and ordonnance? After this visual analysis we’ll go into the historical context and interpretations.

What makes the Joy of Life so special is that it literally gives us a visual reminder of the joy of life. The truly expressive colors and thick brushstrokes, shaping this balanced design are groundbreaking and an icon of fauvism.
