Is there consciousness beyond the brain? | Philip Goff | TEDxNewEngland

TEDx Talks

What if consciousness isn’t a mysterious aspect of the universe—but its very foundation? In this thought-provoking talk, a philosopher challenges conventional science and revives a bold, forgotten theory: that consciousness pervades all matter. From quarks to brains, could experience be woven into the fabric of reality itself? Prepare to question everything you thought you knew about the mind—and your place in the cosmos. Philip is a professor of philosophy at Durham University, UK. His research focuses on consciousness and the ultimate nature of reality. He’s best known for defending panpsychism, the view that consciousness pervades the universe and is a fundamental feature of it. Philip has published many academic articles and written extensively for newspapers and magazines, including Scientific American, The Guardian, and Aeon. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

  1. What about drugs? They are just chemicals but they can change the way we perceive the World and how we feel. A huge impact on consciousness.

  2. He's quick to reject dualism because of no evidence of "incoming signals" to the brain. Yet he supports an even more amorphous proposal that everything is somehow mysteriously connected, without providing any hint of mechanism(s) or similar signals that, it seems, would be required for panspychism to be considered seriously. In fact, he never really even defines the term. It looks alot like eastern mysticism dressed up in quasi-scientific clothes.

  3. Consciousness is linked to the brain. The brain is like a computer. When the power is turned off, all electrical power stops and all computing ability stops with it. Why is it so difficult for people to accept that when death comes, its lights out forever?

  4. You won't see any signal coming into the brain if it's something beyond our understanding. I mean we don't know how gravity acts. Who's to say there isn't a consciousness field that's fundamental in the universe everywhere.

  5. Modern research on Near Death Experience by Raymond moody, reincarnation memories by Ian Stevenson/Jim trucker and past lives regression by Brian Weiss all independently but coincidentally show that our consciousness survive death, we live many lives and our thoughts and actions matter in the hereafter. This is in line with Buddhist teachings.

So be kind and helpful to others, be virtuous, meditate and cultivate ourselves to higher spiritual levels. Cheers.

  6. 2:46 "If there were a non-physical soul controlling your brain the way a drone pilot controls their drone, then we should be able to observe incoming signals arriving in the brain from the soul."
This is bad logic. If there is a soul then there are things that science can't measure at the moment e.g. a soul. Therefore there may well be signals arriving in the brain from the soul that science can't measure. This guy preaches about "hubris" but he assumes science has discovered every type of signal. Which is BS because tell me: how does energy/mass cause spacetime to curve? We have no idea. It could be a wizard did it for all we know.

  7. When we take anesthesia, the witness is present there, and so is to electron, that does mean when we die that witness is passed to the universe but the shock is it already exit in the univerese… Just changing…, Anatta

  8. Panpsychism aligns well with our observations of the quantum world—where atoms seem to "know" they're being watched. This hints that awareness may be a fundamental property of matter. From there, it's a small step to propose a cosmic mind: the universe itself, experiencing life through every conscious being, and also through inanimate objects, since all are made of the same aware atoms.

  9. Your brain and nervous system is the cause of your consciousness. When they shut down at death so does your consciousness. There’s no supernatural or paranormal or ghosts. Your atoms go back to the universe. People that claim consciousness goes beyond the death of the brain have no credible evidence. Yes philosophers had great ideas and relativity claims a lot but the absolute proof there’s a ghost that lives in a biological being is pretty non existent

  10. The nature of matter is dual, it's both conscious and memory, to us electrons are memory, but to Adenine in a strand of DNA, the electrons are not so much memory, they might be quarks, to the quarks, the molecule is conscious, not consciousness, consciousness is the displacement of that system, and when such a displacement causes another displacement elsewhere of a conscious(region relatively bigger in size) it is systemic. And like you said, we think "this is it", and it's never "all of it".

  11. 1. Intelligence does not arise from unintelligence.

In all observation of the natural world, we never see intelligence spontaneously emerge from something wholly unintelligent. Every intelligent being we know has arisen from a source that already possessed intelligence.

    2. You cannot give what you do not have.

Just as a human cannot create intelligence from nothing, the universe cannot bestow intelligence if it does not already possess it. Our own intelligence proves that intelligence exists in the source of all things, because it could not have originated from nothing.

    3. The part reflects the whole.

What exists in a part exists in the whole, even if not every part manifests it. Our intelligence, as a part of the universe, indicates that the universe itself possesses intelligence. Just as hair and nails are parts of a living body but not alive themselves, intelligence in us reflects intelligence in the larger reality.

  12. I think Consciousness is just layers of Brain evolution. These observer layers are subdued when the brain is awake. DMT and other psykedelia, meditation and more, can break down the barrier and let us experience what we all have in common.

  13. If panpsychism were true, AI would be conscious, but it is not! The consciousness field was created by us, to be received by our creation – Us. Immortality is tough. We need you mortals to keep us sane.

  14. Physics doesn't describe the world with equations, the world describes equations with Physics. Math doesn't describe objective reality, but rather our perception of it. This goes to the (false) question of if math is invented or discovered. The question is faulty because it assumes a mutual exclusion that doesn't exist. If we perceive two objects we say that there are two apples for example, but in truth those "objects" are really just aggregates of some very large quantity of smaller "objects" that we cannot perceive, even with our most capable instrumentation. Quantum behavior exists objectively, but can't be properly modeled mathematically because at the point where our perception crosses the event horizon we can only start talking about "infinity."
