Linguistics 101: The scientific study of language [video 1]

Fingtam Languages

I am going to run this video series like a university linguistics course for the benefit of anyone who does not have the time or money to attend actual university courses. So what is Linguistics?

Linguistics is the scientific study of language.

Linguists are able to study language from all kinds of different angles, and there is a lot more to study than you probably realize.

If you’ve ever tried to explain something about your language to someone who is not a native speaker, then you’re probably aware of its complexities, and that is exactly what linguists study.

This video is designed as a primer course for anyone who is interested in languages and linguistics, but doesn’t want to commit to a whole university course, or reading a dense textbook.

  1. Hi Fingtam! I wanted to tell you you’re language videos really inspire me to stay motivated to learn the languages I really want to learn and especially making my own progress videos! I also uploaded my first video trying to speak Japanese

  2. Yey, looking forward for your linguistic video series. Even though we have a lot of youtubers teaching languages. You will be my first real linguistic teacher.

  3. Mi taksas ĉi tiun temon interesega kaj mi tre antaŭĝuas la aliajn filmetojn! ?

(Amuze, kiam vi diris ke "African-American vernacular English has been widely studied", mi unue misaŭdis "whitely studied", ha ha ha). ?

  4. Great, I’m really looking forward to this but I think you should format this less like a lecture and more suited to our terrible attention span, thanks!

  5. I watched this video through and through and it was super well explained. I find it exciting even more because I'm in the process of writing linguistic-y videos as well so it'd be interesting to see your take on the topics you'll cover :). One thing I'd disagree with is when you said that linguists don't study written language – unless I misunderstood. You can definitely work on written corpus (not from transcriptions but from written material) and study words in context for example. I remember in one of my classes, we studied how specific adjective and their antonyms were found in the same sentence or something like that. Can't really remember as my MA in Linguistics was like 2 years ago ahah. But you get my point.
Otherwise the rest was spot on 😀

  6. I'm hoping this will help me prep for my linguistics requirement in the Fall! lol! Digging the spider-man stuff in the background btw! Heck yeah! Thanks for doing this!

  7. hi!
I wonder if you have a video about the theories of linguistic I really need to know the differences between them and the interset of each one

  8. I like the way you chose to proceed through the slides … and I liked the energy you were producing while explaining those concepts. keep it up with the good work.
