New Controls Trends PC Control, Observer Control and Convergence of PLC Programming

A3 Motion Control & Motors

For many years, the standard controls architecture for multi-axis systems used a dedicated motion controller to perform path planning and a PLC to handle overall machine control and manage I/O. Today, OEMs have a broader range of options from which to choose. Observer control leverages modeling and performance data to develop sophisticated motion profiles that minimize ringing and overshoot data. Programmable automation controllers – PLCs that can perform motion control and process control in an integrated environment – are reducing the number of nested control loops required to run a machine. PCs can both run the machine and provide the user interface, following a broader technology trend toward software defined components such as software-defined radio, etc. In this webinar, we’ll review these alternatives, discussing best practices, sweet spot applications, and pitfalls to avoid when specifying and integrating.
