Paint 4 mini landscape paintings full of color and learn color theory in the process!

Angela Fehr

In today’s video lesson, I’m learning about color through play. I follow a few simple rules when working with and choosing color:
1. I focus on a basic understanding of complementary colors and how they interact (side by side, they pop; mixed, they create a neutral).
2. I remember that certain colors are dark value colors (red) and others are light value (yellow) and their tendency toward a range of values influences how much impact they have in the painting.
3. I paint with a light touch so that colors can mix and flow organically and stay luminous.
4. I choose colors for a painting based on my observation – what the reference photo suggests – and my gut – what feels right based on what’s already happening on the paper.

  1. Love it but my imagination is gone. How do I get it back, Angela? I love what you do but can’t seem to do it myself.

  2. Beautiful! I noticed u did not use wet on wet for these but seemed to stay pretty wet throughout. Nice. Ps. What brand paper did u use? Thanks so much. Love your style and instructions

  3. Love this..I really think abstract play is my thing. I am more comfortable with that style. As I now live in sight of Pike's Peak, I would love more detail on how to paint mountains.

  4. I Thoroughly enjoyed this as I have been playing for a while with watercolour. I struggled with smaller and less strokes but this has given me a new look at it. I will keep watching and working,

  5. So inspirational for the colours flow onto our paper and write their own story. Our eyes seek out the words and can add the ending, or maybe it's a new chapter. What a wonderful way for us to speak and dance in colour. Wonderful video you are a joy to watch thank you. ❤❤

  6. I LOVE this! ❤️ The heart led way is perfect for someone like me desperate to create yet too scared to pick up a brush and massively daunted by a blank sheet. I'm also a Gemini so the idea of painting 4 small as opposed to one large is very attractive 😊. I will definitely try this way. Thank you, Angela 🙏🙏🙏💕💕💕 PS I'm in the UK so the paints and brushes will have to be different. Can you recommend the best to start with, by any chance?

  7. you spoke from my heart 🙂 i love the spontaneous paintings as well, i found that a lot of your fav colors are my fav as well, i love to watch your videos

  8. I love how the hues coincided with QOR's high chroma set almost completely – Cobalt Teal, Quin Magenta, Green Gold, Transparent Pyrrol Orange and Dioxazine Violet. This made following along so much fun 😊 Teal looks wonderful ❤️

  9. Ahhh, Shel! Simply lovely! It is just great how you think beyond just doing only a profile of the buck’s head. You add in his hindquarters-very smart! This takes the viewer’s eye right into the painting! Love your videos! From DD in Canada

  10. I have recently (about two months ago) discovered the wonders of gouache. I love this stuff! I don't use it often in my paintings, but there are times when it adds exactly what that particular painting needs. I am not a die-hard purist when it comes to watercolor so I have zero guilt when using it – lol. I love what you said Angela about being in service to our art and doing whatever it takes to serve the painting – awesome! I am going to use the process you showed us today as warm up. I think it will serve many purposes – to loosen me up, teach me more and more about color theory and how different paints interact and play with and around each other and be tons of fun. Thanks for another great tutorial!!
