Semantics Lecture-Intro to Linguistics (Ling 200) Rice University 2013

Carlos Molina-Vital

In this class I present a short introduction to semantics, particularly lexical semantics. It was a guest lecture I gave as a part of the Intro to Linguistics class that my friend, Katie Nelson, asked me to give at Rice University, Houston, Texas on March 4th, 2013.

Topics I covered were the relation between language and reality, sense and reference, different ways of understanding meaning, lexical semantics and lexical relations (semantic fields, basic level categorization, synonyms, etc.) Finally, I talk about conceptual metaphors as a way to express how meaning is coded in language in a way that is not necessarily objective or based on truth values. .
