Space Exploration is the Worst | Emily Calandrelli | TEDxIndianaUniversity

TEDx Talks

Opening for TEDxIndianaUniversity was Xploration Outer Space producer and star, Emily Calandrelli’s tongue in cheek summary of why space exploration is actually a misguided and empty pursuit, upon which billions of dollars are wasted every year.

Emily Calandrelli is a producer and the host of FOX’s Xploration Outer Space, a nationally syndicated educational program about the space industry. She is also a writer for TechCrunch where she covers
technology topics with a focus on commercial space companies.

Emily graduated from MIT with a Masters in Aeronautics and Astronautics and second Masters in Technology and Policy. While at MIT, Emily was awarded the Rene H. Miller Award for the best piece of Systems Engineering work in the AeroAstro department. She received her bachelors in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from West Virginia University. As an undergraduate, Emily received the Truman
Scholarship, Goldwater Scholarship, and placed on USA Today’s All-USA Academic First Team.

Emily enjoys writing, speaking, and posting on her social media (@TheSpaceGal) on the topics of science literacy, space exploration, and equality in STEM fields.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

  1. I can just imagine the crowd watching on in horror as she rips into space..
"Omg I thought the title was joking…"
    14m later..
"Oh YOU! You got me good!"

  2. so nasa found a taco crotch to do their bidding – using high heels and a dress wrapped as
tightly as her face is now – sarcasm has its place – but not in a narrative selling globalist
BS agenda – these inbreds really think they are the solution to our problems

  3. Globalists like Bill Gates and others want all but 500,000,000 of us dead and gone..and if not rich you have to be useful to them to be one of the 500,000,000 or you have no right to exist!.

  4. She didn't talk about space exploration. Weather satellites pointed at the Earth, communication satellites to expand the internet and colonizing other worlds are all about space utilization. Exploration wasn't mentioned at all. But if the clickbait title draws people in, and the nearly amusing sarcasm keeps them around, then it's all good…

  5. And how is OneWeb doing today? According to their Wikipedia page, "OneWeb declared bankruptcy in late March 2020, and has laid off most of their employees, but is maintaining the satellite operations center for the 68 satellites already in orbit while the court determines disposition of the OneWeb assets." Well, too bad for them and their investors but fortunately SpaceX has stepped up to the plate, launching 60 StarLink satellites at a time via its Falcon-9 reusable rockets for a total now of 540 Internet satellites, just a fraction of their intended constellation. Beta testing is set to begin soon in North America with other continents included in 2021. Once the massive SpaceX Starship is tested in orbit, it will take over StarLink deployment, inserting 400 units at a time at a MUCH lower launch cost ($2-million vs. $57-million for the Falcon-9) thanks to its Raptor engines burning "dirt-cheap" methane and oxygen vs. RP1.

  6. Where do you think all that com technology your using comes from?
Where do you think internet technology comes from…
Where do you think meteorology tracking comes from for your weather forecasts…
Where do you think microwave tech comes from?
Where do you think all that automotive technology comes from? I can go on. But you get the point.
