The biggest lie about the double slit experiment

Looking Glass Universe

This video is about the biggest lie people are told about the double slit experiment: that electrons are particles when they’re observed, but waves when they’re not. The truth is much more interesting.

  1. The simplest possible summary is:

Light and matter do not always behave like tiny solid objects moving along a single path.

The double slit experiment shows that:

Light can behave like a wave.
Electrons can behave like a wave.
Atoms can behave like a wave.
Even individual particles can produce wave-like interference patterns.

    It also shows that:

When information about the path taken becomes available, that wave-like behavior disappears and particle-like behavior appears.

    That's the experimental result.

    Nothing more and nothing less.

  2. Yes, but there's a very important caveat.

We know for sure that their behavior changes when they interact with a measuring apparatus or the environment in a way that reveals information about them.

We do not know for sure that they change because a conscious observer is watching.

    That's the distinction.

  3. Instead of interpreting the electron as being a wave, isn't this experiment just showing that the electrons have some electromagnetic interactions with the atoms on the edges of the slit structure, therefore they do not end up simply in one point on the screen? If you think about it, the stream of electrons can never be (infinitely) perfectly aligned with the slit, so the electrons will pass sometimes a little bit closer to the edges of the slit structure and sometimes a little bit further away, causing the electrons to be pushed a bit to the right or to the left. In large numbers, this behavior would paint a distribution of results that looks like the result of a wave, but it is just a statistical distribution. This seems a much simpler and more logical interpretation.

  4. I would say that electron is particle, and wave is created due to so called ether(ambient). It like electron swiming in wavy ambient, it creates praesue and the slits creating interference of ambient. Regarding the light like dots due to the fact that your measurement device is made of discrete materia.

  5. Claude ai just completely disagreed with what this woman says and the vast majority of all explanations you find of the double slit doesn't match this. She is stating that the photons or electrons remain a wave.

  6. So if AI were the observer of the double-slit experiment, it would come out that it had no consciousness because the outcome would be the same, observing or not observing?!

  7. Whether a wave or particle, double slit or single slit experiment, they clearly intercept each other but in the single slit experiment where you are looking at electrons, they're still seems to be some unseen interference that is beyond electrons pushing each other away and interfering with each other

  8. What I also don’t understand is… if we pretended we didn’t know and we assumed it’s all bullets, why would we even expect anything to go through the two slots? If I throw a ball between two windows I don’t expect it to go through any window.

  9. Not that I'm a quantum physicist but it seems to me from this video that all of these experiments show evidence of wave function but no reason to see them as traditional particles in any case.

Perhaps they remain waves regardless of observation method but interact on smaller scales than we're currently able to simulate, something that might be more comparable to eddy currents (just on an extremely small scale that the "currents" don't behave in ways were readily able to predict), giving the illusion of particle behaviour, but what do I know lol.

  10. This video didn't tell me anything I don't already know from watching other videos. Only watched it because of the "Biggest Lie" in the title but never found out what that was! Waste of time.

  12. I don't understand why so many people are confused. When you shrink down to the atomic scale, you lose the sense of touch. Atoms are smaller than bits of material, so of course it's pointless trying to put it in a "wave" or "particle" box. You can't compare it to normal material because it's not made of the same stuff.

With everythijg else, you can imagine blowing it up and increasing its size so we can interact with it. Clearly we can't do this with the small stuff because it's not made out of stuff we can touch.

  13. Seems like the entire language of particles is misleading. These are all disturbances in their own respective fields, which can interact with disturbances from the same field and sometimes with other fields, and the whole notion of particle-ity arises from measurement.

  14. This video is pretty bad. It opens like it's about to change everything and in the end it changes nothing. You dont need to fake changing everything people knew to result interesting.

  15. 둘다 입자도 파동도 아닌게 아니라. 둘다 입자입니다. 다만 고립계에서 외부와 상호작용이 없어 시간이 존재하지 않는 입자입니다. 상태가 결정이 되면 시간이 흐릅니다.
