The Interpretations of Quantum Mechanics

Alphatucana

A look at the four main interpretations of quantum mechanics, and what they imply about the nature of reality.

The interpretations I look at are:
1) The Copenhagen interpretation;
2) The John von Neumann interpretation;
3) Hidden Variables theories;
4) The Many Worlds interpretation.

I also consider briefly a recent idea that entangled particles may be connected by wormholes, but I am skeptical about the theory. I argue that the latter two interpretations and the wormhole theory are primarily desperate attempts to save parts of classical physics, and as such are unlikely to be correct. The Copenhagen interpretation fails the logic test as it doesn’t have any way of objectively defining what an observer is, so we are left with von Neumann’s interpretation: consciousness is a non-physical, fundamental feature of reality.

ABOUT ALPHATUCANA
This channel is about ‘waking up’ from our matrix-induced slumber, and about leaving the World a better place than we found it. For most of us, our powers and motivation are strictly limited. We are fundamentally alone in a vast and mysterious Universe, but In the struggle to survive, to ‘succeed’, or to just get by, we sometimes forget the bigger picture, and we sometimes forget to just relax for a while and remember what an amazing World this is. There is plenty to look at: science, Nature, society… And there are plenty of games to help us get away from it all… So on this channel, I vlog about science, Nature, enlightenment, current affairs and much else besides, I upload sightseeing videos showing London, England, or my holidays elsewhere, and I upload gameplay videos. So why not join in for a while and see what you think?

POSTING SCHEDULE
This depends in part on whether I have had time to record videos in between going to work and living the rest of my life! Usually it runs like this:
– Sat or Sun: a vlog or sightseeing video at midday (UK time).
– Gameplay videos: pretty random – typically at midday on weekdays, but not all the time.
– If I have something extra to post it usually appears at some random time 🙂 I may livestream occasionally too.

  1. @4:57, If consciousnesses can't be a brain state because your brain doesn't have the same properties of red when it recognizes it, how can a computer recognize red in a photo without having the same properties of red? Recognizing a color and logging it doesn't take a lot of processing cycles for either, especially since the details of both are probably managed by sub-processes, subroutines for computers and subconscious translations of sensory date within animal nervous systems. We don't need to create and store a molecular sample of the red light pattern internally in either to make that recognition. It's just a variable composed of a string of ASCII characters in the computer, and a remembered image condition that's commonly referred to as red by humans. I'm open to the ideal of there being something more to human consciousness, but this doesn't seem to require any.

  2. What about the idea that boundless Consciousness is all that there is and that mass and energy are just various modes or conditions of this infinite Consciousness — different states or forms of this same one self-aware existence. Some have said that they have actually experienced this to be true and that the duality model of mind/consciousness and matter is not really accurate because it fails to see this underlying unity.

  3. Well done, hopefully I don't insult you but you're quite a practical philosopher of quantum. Again that's a compliment & not an insult.

  4. No determinism does not mean there is free will. Libreterian free will makes no sense everything is ether caused by something or is caused be lack or some combination of both. We don't control lack but we might control the causes but our control of the causes is either using some cause or lack or a combination and take that far enough in the causal chain and nothing originated from us all was from the begining of the universe (or whatever) and lack. determinism just means there is no luck, the addition of luck does not make free will possible !

  5. But consciousness is the result of the physical reactions within our brain which is all based on physics and therefor also follows the rules of quantum physics. Therefor, our consciousness is just as limited as the instruments making the measurements in being "the observer".

    In this case, either consciousness is either not required, or the universe doesn't exist and we're not here.

  6. Great video!! I’d love to hear more interpretations, also I’d love to hear you explain the time delayed quantum eraser, and how the different interpretations explain it.

    Lastly, A Beautiful Mind was about John Nash, not Von Neumann.

  7. i've had an idea for quite a while that combines the hidden variables theory with the many worlds theory. it's hard to explain it and it's also not fleshed out in my mind well enough yet. i am going to try and make a series a graphics to plot it out, as well as to articulate it.
    the basic idea in my head is to think of the universe as a 3d etch a sketch ( a 2d children's toy from the 70s that can draw 2d images) and combine that with the notion of a system's potentiality. i would contend that all things already exist as information and that when we as humans delineate between what exists and what doesn't is actually just an arbitrary process of our minds.

  8. Ive done quite a bit of reading on Bells inequality and the result is that one or more of the underlying assumptions is wrong… If free will is wrong, determinism is ok, as i understood..
