CBS Sunday Morning

Altschul talks with museum director Glenn Lowry, curator Sarah Suzuki, and architect Liz Diller, of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, about the museum’s expansion.

  1. gosh.. people even sort out garbage these days and these guys decided that Art should not be sorted out and be put in different locations. One large melting pot, really.
Hardly any respect for the Art itself.

  2. God, Americans are so irritating. Horrible narration and the gallery looks like a shopping mall housing a pile of junk from the garbage fort.

  3. Why, oh why, do those Richard Serra steel columns need to weigh 80 tons apiece? I see no reason for that. Special engineering was required to reinforce that floor to support the enormous weight.

  4. Judging by some of the comments here, I think the skeptics have a valid cynicism. Art is now like TV, cinema, fashion, or modeling, meaning these are not merit-based systems, they are rigged via nepotism and cronyism, having the appearance of merit. Years ago Alfred Stieglitz was the gatekeeper for photography. If you kissed his ring, you got a chance. Is it any different with Harvey Weinstein? Take off your clothes and lie down, and maybe I'll give you a part in a movie. In much of today's existence, the fix is in, we're just unaware how extensive it is. And if that's not bad enough, the money laundering angle is valid. Something not touched on here is the "flip my painting" aspect. Even Mark Rothko as early as the 1950s was stating that art had become a scam of the rich…speculation…buy a work and hold it five years, then flip it. Much of modern art is crap, merely an asset class held by the rich and purposely intended to be flipped at regular intervals. It's a glorified pyramid scheme.

  5. The uneducated comments here are hilarious! Abstract art is very involved, intimate and personal. If you think just splattering some paint at random is all it is, then congrats because you just became the artwork titled "The uneducated masses". A fine piece of cubism with intricate lines of both primary and complementary colors, with a touch tonalism weaved throughout .

  6. I just realized halfway through that the host is Serena Altschul…just had flashbacks of my 90's MTV summer beach house/grunge junior/high school days.

  7. Overrated junk supported by bloated ego's. lousy art exhibits to bore the mind. If you're looking for actual artistic talent and skill that will ignite your imagination and fuel the artistic drive, look elsewhere!

  8. "We are going to open on time… These kinds of projects come together in the last minutes." "The Emperor does not share your optimistic appraisal of the situation."

  9. modern art is crap. What a gimmick to make money. People are suckers. The Lobby looks like a hospital waiting room. I’m not impressed. I’ve seen junk yards that look more interesting.
