The Mystery of Consciousness with Richard Smoley

New Thinking Allowed with Jeffrey Mishlove

Richard Smoley is editor of Quest: The Journal of the Theosophical Society in America. He is also former editor of Gnosis Magazine. His books include Hidden Wisdom: The Guide to the Western Inner Traditions, Inner Christianity: The Guide to the Esoteric Tradition, Forbidden Faith: The Secret History of Gnosticism, The Essential Nostradamus, Conscious Love: Insights from Mystical Christianity, The Dice Game of Shiva: How Consciousness Creates the Universe, The Supernatural: Writings on an Unknown History, The Deal: A Guide to Radical and Complete Forgiveness, and How God Became God: What Scholars Are Really Saying About God and the Bible.

Here he proposes a simple definition for consciousness – an awareness of self and other. Essentially, all consciousness, then, involves a sense of relationship. He notes that this recognition of relationship can be observed even among molecules, atoms, and particles. This is a viewpoint akin to panpsychism. He acknowledges the mystical state of awareness sometimes referred to as “consciousness without an object”. He also maintains that our understanding of consciousness, and its limitations, is greatly influenced by cultural conditioning.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in “parapsychology” ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is a past vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology; and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that Association for his contributions to the field of human consciousness. He is also past-president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people are encouraged to cultivate and apply their inner, intuitive abilities.

  1. There's layers upon our I, a song can be playing, a stream of thought flowing, and then the I watching both. I've even noticed a stream of thought as well as a song playing in the background , a feeling and the seeing of all three.

  2. I'm realising the power of thought loaded with intention , Wish upon a star and it happens good and bad. I wished ill will upon another for their crimes of abuse and it happened. The branch didn't snap but was badly bruised. A system is crumbling around me I can't psychically change myself but my will yearns for it. Know what I mean?

  3. My theory of life has been that every particle, every atom 'knows' what the other is 'doing.' But the question remains, why is existence the way it is (love, pain, gravity, maths, opposites, mutations etc) and not any other? Why is it designed in this particular way? To me the hands of teleological creation are evident but I do not understand why create it in the first place. Sometimes the Universe acts like a recording that is already formed along a certain path.

  4. "You think of one I-self (spelled) as the primary and ultimate end of evolution. Yet there are, of course, other identities with many such I-selves, each as aware and independent as your own, while also being aware of the existence of a greater identity in which they have their being. Consciousness fulfills itself by knowing itself. The knowledge changes it, in your terms, into a greater gestalt that then tries to fulfill and know itself, and so forth."

  5. so glad to listen to these boys talking about the inherent animus in rocks, earth etc while boys like dawkins and hitchens etc continue denying the existence of consciousness in 'things' that aren't hominid. There in lies the rub – ego and human vanity/narcissism = ignorance. All tribal ppls already know of the animus of non human truths. Only we two-leggeds and white two-leggeds most of all, are the culprits.

  6. One of the best interviews on your channel. Keep up the good work Jeffrey. I also really like the way you show the cover page of the referenced books. Thanks

  7. In the Beginning Was the Logos . . . ! The Creative Word,  I AM ! The One Light, The Admirable Intelligence, The Beginnings of the Whirlings . .  so many betters words than God; who like Zeus (Deus) anthropomorphic old mad long great beard and all,  sitting on a cloud , usually throwing thunder bolts, like Zeus down upon the graveling fearful masses  below!

  8. Scientists brain-scanned young boys from around the world who are completely blind but who use the amazing ability of echo-location "to see" and discovered that their brains "re-wired" utilizing the visual cortex part of the brain. One blind boy's hearing had become so sensitive to sound that he could cycle a bike down a busy street while constantly "clicking", or walk down supermarket aisles, again "clicking", and know exactly where specific grocery items were just by the sonar returns he received. Jaw-dropping to watch.

  9. It was a great discussion and very interesting, but I was disappointed the moment the guest seemed to take ghosts seriously.  There'd be actual evidence of them by now.  They aren't real and pretending they are is a huge distraction to real progress and I found it pretty discouraging to hear this.

  10. decades ago, osho rajneesh offered the crabs analogy for politicians, dragging one another down whenever one advanced
one questions whether he originated it; i bet it is pretty old

    thanks for the considerations, gentlemen
i especially like 'consciousness w/o an object', perhaps more aptly referred to as 'zero point consciousness' (from tom campbell, though i don't know if he coined the term)

  11. I like the crab metaphor, I do see how mankind does that to each other. Being aware of that maybe we can help each other free ourselves from the bucket. Thanks for all the videos!
