Research into the development of artificial intelligence has stimulated interest in the nature of consciousness and given rise to works of science fiction that speculate upon the outcome of the fusion of the human (organic) and the robotic (mechanical). This paper examines two novels that draw upon mythological sources in which the central function of deity in the original myth has been replaced by a focus on the activity of the cybernetic brain. The balance of power has shifted from divine providence to human intelligence. Where formerly the immortal gods were regarded as masters of the universe, in a post-Frankenstein age the ingenuity of the human mind has come to be seen as all powerful.
