What Does Consciousness Do? – Swami Sarvapriyananda’s Perspective

Science & Wisdom LIVE

How does consciousness shape what we see and feel?

Swami Sarvapriyananda, a revered teacher of Advaita Vedanta, explores the fundamental nature of consciousness. He explains that consciousness is not something that does in the conventional sense—it illuminates. Like light revealing objects in a dark room, consciousness reveals both the world and itself.

He draws a clear distinction between consciousness and knowledge. While computers and AI can gather and process information, they lack the inner experience—the first-person awareness that defines consciousness. Our entire experience of life, from thoughts to sensory perception, is simply consciousness illuminating objects, whether external or internal.

By shifting our perspective from consciousness as an active force to consciousness as the ever-present awareness behind all experiences, Swami Sarvapriyananda offers a profound insight into what it means to be aware.

  1. i HOPE I get a response for this but I've come to learn that in life, some things never rise up to ur consciousness unless u are ready for it and i believe that until u raise ur level of consciousness, some experiences never happen to u and some actions can reduce ur consciousness levels. Idk really its just a way i feel, i may be incorrect

  2. If I was an entity that looked at itself in the way consciousness reveals itself as humans (other living things are okay, as they aren't evil), I wouldn't like myself, I'd rather be boring & neutral, because the good doesn't excuse the bad.

Maybe we're the consciousness of a narcissistic psychopath, and the good is just the ecstatic feeling narcissistic fuel gives it, the dreamy universe (Maya, not real) and the bad is it's true, empty, ugly, evil, ultimate self.

  3. IT is just HOW the universe makes itself known to IT self. The HERE-ness, NOW-ness, and SUCH-ness of Being cannot ever be perceived, interpreted, nor understood by a machine of any kind, not really, not truly, not ever, not in the human Way ✨.
