Art History + Music: Helen Frankenthaler

Gabriela Esquivel

Helen Frankenthaler was an expressionist abstract painter. “Mountains and Oceans” was her first exhibition in 1952. She invented and used the “soak stain” technique to apply the colors on unprepared canvases. During her life, she was also interested in woodcuts which had a similarity to her paintings. The natural landscape was one of the themes that inspired her.
