Brancusi: Pioneer of American Minimalism at PAUL KASMIN GALLERY

jameskalm

James Kalm brings viewers along for a leisurely saunter through this jewel box exhibition. “Constantin Brancusi’s (1876 – 1957) sculptures ignited a crucial shift in the tradition of American and European sculpture by distilling representational forms down to their most essential elements”. Championed in New York by the likes of Marcel Duchamp, the works of Brancusi captured the attention of a generation of artists during a crucial period of transition out of the exaggerated gesture and existential angst of the Abstract Expressionists. Brancusi’s immaculate finishes, meta-awareness of artistic tropes, and exquisite craftsmanship, inspired the reductive theoretical aesthetic that manifest in the mid 1960s as American Minimalism. Also presented are works by: Carl Andre, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Ryman, Donald Judd, Frank Stella and Dan Flavin

  1. Brancusi always stands out. Nice video. Nice show. Wonder what Judd would have to say about that flashy presentation of his piece? The little Ryman is a gem . I like these gallery shows you visit better than some of the overwhelming giant museum shows.

  2. why does everyone put brancusi's pieces in plinth's that he did not make. he made his plinth already why put another base. thats a literal defacement of the work that prioritizes its comodification over the artists original intent also andre is a criminal
