Cheetah Robot Gallops at 18 mph

BostonDynamics

Cheetah is a new robot being developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from DARPA’s Maximum Mobility and Manipulation program. Last week Cheetah set a new land speed record for legged robots, galloping 18 mph on the treadmill. This version of the Cheetah is a lab prototype with offboard power and a boom that planarizes its motion. Testing on a free-running version of the Cheetah that will run ‘unplugged’ in the field starts later this year. For more information about Cheetah or the other robots we develop, visit www.BostonDynamics.com.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing these videos, its giving us a detailed look into finding ways to stop them when they replace soldiers – the totalitarian tiptoe is gathering speed – a bit like this contraption on this video.

  2. My only curious question is, if these were to be put out into the real world, somehow lose their balance and fall over – how will it get back up?

Just a little question that should be a lil important in the design.

  3. We are witnessing the extinction of humans at its conception. Designing these products so they can not only beat us in strength and intelligence but agility too. Ask yourself would an AI given the task of ultimate efficiency consider the possibility of terminating such flawed creatures? The same creatures that create the hindrances to ultimate efficiency? We are moving towards automated driving for this reason. Robots are better at everything we do. It makes sense to say that at a point where they no longer need us they will begin to see us as unnecessary and even roadblocks.

  4. This is a dog type galloping motion as opposed to a horse motion or bounding. Dogs and cats have flexible spines and gallop in a different rhythm than solid-spine quadrupeds like horses. So interesting.
